Because we know we can look up a piece of information anytime we want — whether it's a phone number or George Clooney's birthday — we're far less likely to memorize it. Often during the day, I end up Googling articles I read just a few hours ago because I can't recall more than a few key words.

https://www.businessinsider.com/i-outsourced-my-memory-remember-what-you-read-using-ai-2023-1?utm_source=CrimsonedGlass

Heyday, which bills itself as an AI-memory assistant, promises to fix the two key challenges I've faced with reading-list tools: it demands little to no effort from me and aims to help me remember things better. Instead of simply cataloging where I read something, it promised to help me recall what I've been reading. In the three weeks I spent with the app, I found it was effective at helping me remember things, but it comes with a catch: Using a memory tool like this has the potential to make your biological memory worse over time.

Sinclair has long proposed that aging is the result of losing critical instructions that cells need to continue functioning, in what he calls the Information Theory of Aging. “Underlying aging is information that is lost in cells, not just the accumulation of damage,” he says. “That’s a paradigm shift in how to think about aging.“

https://time.com/6246864/reverse-aging-scientists-discover-milestone/

His latest results seem to support that theory. It’s similar to the way software programs operate off hardware, but sometimes become corrupt and need a reboot, says Sinclair. “If the cause of aging was because a cell became full of mutations, then age reversal would not be possible,” he says. “But by showing that we can reverse the aging process, that shows that the system is intact, that there is a backup copy and the software needs to be rebooted.”

In the mice, he and his team developed a way to reboot cells to restart the backup copy of epigenetic instructions, essentially erasing the corrupted signals that put the cells on the path toward aging. They mimicked the effects of aging on the epigenome by introducing breaks in the DNA of young mice. (Outside of the lab, epigenetic changes can be driven by a number of things, including smoking, exposure to pollution and chemicals.) Once “aged” in this way, within a matter of weeks Sinclair saw that the mice began to show signs of older age—including grey fur, lower body weight despite unaltered diet, reduced activity, and increased frailty.

Neuroscientists at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) observed the activation of the brains of young and older adults when confronted with the psychological suffering of others.

https://neurosciencenews.com/emotion-brain-aging-22250/

The neuronal connections of the older adults show significant emotional inertia: negative emotions modify them excessively and over a long period of time, particularly in the posterior cingulate cortex and the amygdala, two brain regions strongly involved in the management of emotions and autobiographical memory.

However, older people tend to regulate their emotions better than younger people, and focus more easily on positive details, even during a negative event. But changes in connectivity between the posterior cingulate cortex and the amygdala could indicate a deviation from the normal aging phenomenon, accentuated in people who show more anxiety, rumination and negative emotions.

A small environmental startup called Make Sunsets has started injecting sulfur dioxide particles into the stratosphere in an effort to ever-so-slightly cool the planet, a provocative and unproven method of combating a growing climate crisis.

As The Washington Post reports, the company's CEO and founder Luke Iseman released six-foot helium balloons filled with sulfur dioxide over Baja California in Mexico last year.

Pressure to achieve stops celebration of the small wins

Sadly, the unrealistic pressures that Gen Z and Millennials are putting on themselves are stopping them from celebrating the small wins, with just one in 10 of those surveyed saying that they always celebrate the small wins. Of those who don't always celebrate small wins, 30% say it's because they feel that whatever they do, it's never good enough.

“I mean, some of the complaints out there about what ABA practice looks like at times is absolutely true.”

Juarez says it’s true, for instance, that not so long ago, it was common to make kids go through 40 hours a week of ABA — even some who didn’t require high levels of support.

https://whyy.org/segments/how-a-therapy-once-seen-as-a-victory-for-autistic-kids-has-come-under-fire-as-abuse/

Another major complaint was ABA’s emphasis on compliance and conformity.

“When I ask you to do something, you need to do it,” Juarez said. “And I think that for sure can be traumatizing if you don’t feel like you have the ability to be autonomous or to self-determine your own behavior or to self-advocate. So sometimes during those drills self-advocacy wasn’t honored. So, I’m tired. I need a break. Or behavior that showed us this person is not interested in doing this anymore. We would just keep going and prompting — we being behavior analysts of the past. And that can be really, really challenging and certainly upsetting.”

NASA's DART spacecraft will crash into an asteroid tonight in historic planetary defense test

https://youtu.be/4RA8Tfa6Sck

"Hitting an asteroid is a tough thing to do."

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft is hurtling toward the asteroid Didymos and its moonlet Dimorphos, and it'll reach its target tonight (Sept. 26). At 7:14 p.m. EDT (2314 GMT), if all goes well, DART will crash into Dimorphos in an attempt to alter the moonlet's trajectory. The mission is meant to test the theory that this technique could be used to divert an asteroid heading straight for Earth.

While neither Dimorphos nor Didymos pose a threat to our planet, and nothing that happens today can change that, the results of the DART mission will provide crucial data for scientists and engineers to develop plans for planetary defense. DART, which is managed for NASA by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL), marks the first-ever planetary defense test. You can watch the DART asteroid impact live online, courtesy of NASA, beginning at 6 p.m. EDT (2200 GMT).

Life’s Stresses Can Make People Focus More on Their Romantic Partner’s Negative Behavior

https://neurosciencenews.com/stress-partner-behavior-21517/

Stress can have a detrimental impact on relationships. When feeling stressed, a person is more likely to notice and reflect upon their partner’s negative behaviors rather than positive behavior.

Researchers noted a single stressful day was not enough to make someone zero in on their partner’s negative behavior, but a longer accumulation of stressful life circumstances could cause this shift in focus.

The findings also suggest that those under stress were not any less likely to notice their partner’s positive behavior, but they were more likely to notice inconsiderate actions.

NASA Just Confirms Tenth Planet Discovery Reveals It's Larger Than Pluto

The world has seen the wonder of dwarf planets in all their glory, and the uniqueness of these planets makes them a center of attention to this day.

Over the past decades, astronomers have extensively researched our galaxy and its components. The discoveries made by scientists on their research journey have catapulted their analysis and observations of the planets around us as we discover new things every day about them and their peculiarities too. From the discovery of planets that have the potential to serve as habitats for life to thrive, to the empty planets, the list is endless

The world can feel like an uncertain place. Unless we can learn to live with not being sure, it’s very easy for us to become overwhelmed. What my research in psychology and neuroscience has taught me is that getting used to the intrinsic uncertainty of the world is essential for success: the people who thrive are those with the ability to accept and adapt to constant change and uncertainty.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-nature-human-emotions/202209/getting-through-any-obstacle-in-life

The good news is that we can improve our ability to adapt. It takes practice and we often need to push ourselves outside our comfort zone. I managed to overcome my reluctance to speak in public and adapted over time to the demands of being an academic psychologist.

Harnessing the benefits of an agile mind can be transformative. It’s important to remember that we are active stewards of our own well-being, rather than passive victims of change and so we must actively manage our approach to life. Our natural skills of agility are necessary to help us navigate a complex and unpredictable world. I have seen time and again how developing an agile mindset—the capacity to flex our thoughts, feelings, and actions—can transform our lives and bolster our resilience.

The FBI Says People Are Using Deepfakes to Apply to Remote Jobs

https://twistedsifter.com/2022/09/the-fbi-says-people-are-using-deepfakes-to-apply-to-remote-jobs/

In case you’re not familiar with the term “deepfake“, let us fill you in. It’s a technology where one person’s face is essentially replaced by someone else’s…yeah, those are the times we’re living in now, folks.

And now the FBI is warning that people are using deepfakes to apply for remote tech jobs. The alert from the FBI said that these people have used stolen information, deepfake videos, and deepfake voices in their endeavors and that a lot of these jobs allow people to have access to sensitive information such as employee and customer data and financial and proprietary company information, so this phenomenon could potentially cause a lot of problems.

People are losing hope faster than at any time in history—except this group

Learned Hopefulness
As it turns out, people who are more hopeful see the world in a different way. In studying what makes people have high hope or low hope, I’ve found that the high hope people have seven thinking habits about how they are going to perceive the world.

Higher hope decisions are teachable. With learned hopefulness, you can sustainably have less anxiety and depression, greater resilience, less negativity, and more joy just like the high hope people. The key is understanding exactly what hope is, and making that realization work for you.

People who are highly hopeful think differently in a way that is teachable.

People with greater measures of hope live longer and healthier.

Hope is the only positive emotion that requires negativity or uncertainty to be activated.

“A relationship is a physiologic process, as real and as potent as any pill or surgical procedure.”

Take a puppy away from his mother, place him alone in a wicker pen, and you will witness the universal mammalian reaction to the rupture of an attachment bond — a reflection of the limbic architecture mammals share. Short separations provoke an acute response known as protest, while prolonged separations yield the physiologic state of despair.

https://www.inverse.com/science/science-distracted-thinking

Smallwood learned that unhappy minds tend to wander in the past, while happy minds often ponder the future. He also became convinced that wandering among our memories is crucial to help prepare us for what is yet to come. Though some kinds of mind-wandering — such as dwelling on problems that can’t be fixed — may be associated with depression, Smallwood now believes mind-wandering is rarely a waste of time. It is merely our brain trying to get a bit of work done when it is under the impression that there isn’t much else going on.

Alexis Lemaire is a mental calculation world record holder. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science related to artificial intelligence from the University of Reims. He is also the owner of world records for mentally calculating the 13th root of 100-digit numbers and 200-digit numbers.

A 27-year-old Frenchman, correctly calculated the 13th root of a random 200-digit number from a possible 393 trillion answers. The so-called ‘mathlete’ produced the answer of 2,407,899,893,032,210 in 70.2 seconds, beating his previous record of 72.4 seconds, at London’s Science Museum. A computer was used to produce a random 200-digit number before he sat down to calculate the answer in his head.

Here's one initial step every romantic relationship can take to begin a weekly ritual of emotional connection. Spend one hour this Saturday or Sunday and schedule a "State of the Union" conversation with your spouse.

It’s not infidelity that's driving the divorce rate these days.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-state-our-unions/202209/divorce-trend-may-reshape-marriage-forever

Financially independent 50-year-olds who expect to live into their 100s are rethinking the game. It’s not a surprise to me.

The hypocrisy of monogamy isn't that people are divorcing, it's that they've tolerated loveless and sexless marriages for on average six-plus years before calling it quits.

These divorces often follow betrayal. Sometimes sexual, certainly. However increasingly for non-sexual reasons. It is an emotional betrayal, a neglecting or outright denial of core needs, wants, and preferences.

It is estimated that more than 6 million Americans currently have Alzheimer’s.

Biomarkers of misfolded proteins are found in the blood by a sensor.

https://scitechdaily.com/new-device-can-detect-alzheimers-17-years-in-advance/

Before the first clinical symptoms appear, Alzheimer’s disease has a 15–20 year symptom-free period. A research team has discovered that it is possible to detect Alzheimer’s disease in the blood up to 17 years before any outward symptoms start to show. This is done by using an immuno-infrared sensor developed in Bochum. The sensor detects the protein biomarker amyloid-beta misfolding. As the condition progresses, this misfolding results in distinctive deposits in the brain, known as plaques.

“This is the first [study] that has performed such a comprehensive comparison of human embryos that were created with spindle transfer,” says Dietrich Egli, a stem-cell biologist at Columbia University in New York City. He adds that the work is “unique and fabulous” for its high quality and the amount of data it provides. Egli says that the safety of spindle transfer was expected — because of evidence from previous animal studies and the healthy child born in 2016 — but not conclusively shown until now.
