I had a question posed to me about dextrose injections. It's called Prolotherapy or Sclerotherapy and it's been practiced in one for or another for at least 100 years.

The way this story has been covered in the past is a bit misleading....its not the people who have been prescribed the pain relievers who are dying and addicted - but the people into whose hands these leftover pills find their way. The issue isn't whether patients should or shouldn't have access to opiod pain relievers, but a distribution and control issue.

As always, once we identify a problem, we tend to be overly restrictive on recovery. Thankfully, not all people follow the instructions they were given, so in some cases, we get lots of data to look at over time. Not sure what this study really means, because it looked at such a large and diverse group, with respect to injury range, type of activities, etc, but perhaps the pendulum was swung a little too far, when we were seeing (and still seeing) strict rest being advocated. Maybe "active rest" is good for all physical injuries - neurological, musculoskeletal, and otherwise?

This was a patient released from therapy early last week. From start to finish it was about 8 weeks, averaging just less than 2 visits per week. He did lots of "sweat equity" outside of his treatment sessions which lead to his fast, and dramatic, recovery.

This is a great news article about a growing field of research. It validates what many physical therapists have known anecdotally for decades. Frailty is not an adjective in this situation, but a diagnosis.

Many of my patients have started off as "Frail" only to open the door back to better function and better health. It's never too late to reverse course, but the longer you wait, the tougher it can be.

Surgeons are testing older patients to see how likely they are to survive procedures.
