Recovering from Hammertoe Surgery

A hammertoe is a common foot deformity in which the lesser toes buckle at one of the toe joints called the proximal interphalangeal joint.

Hammertoes can develop from various conditions whether it be flat feet, high arched feet or some neurological conditions. A hammertoe can either be a flexible, semi-rigid or rigid deformity.

Depending on the extent of the deformity, hammertoe surgery can range from removal of a portion of the bone called the proximal phalangeal head to fusing the joint with either a pin or an implant so that the deformity does not recur.

Blisters come from the friction between skin layers. This friction causes your body to simply produce fluid to protect against continued trauma.

Most times, those small pockets of fluid, usually clear plasma, but sometimes blood, are just irritating. But, if you are a diabetic, have poor circulation, or a compromised immune system, and don’t properly disinfect one that pops, little blisters can lead to big health problems.

The danger is that if a blister bursts, or starts to bleed, it progresses to an open wound and you have the potential to get an infection that can go all the way up your leg.

If you get a blister, come see one of our expert podiatrists at Advanced Podiatry of Manhasset, Huntington, Plainview, or Maspeth, to have your blister appropriately treated and prevent Infection.

Feet Feat: Small Size, Huge Significance

When it comes to massage of the feet, there are a number of specific treatments available. A licensed massage therapist is trained and experienced to treat the feet with specific knowledge of the anatomy involved.

In comparison to most other bones, muscles, soft tissues, ligaments and tendons of the body, those of the feet are small in size. Still, they are huge in significance.

Frostbite

Well, the weather outside isn’t exactly frightful. It’s been downright beautiful actually, and I’ll take it any day.

Watching the Olympics and seeing people bundled up from the frigid temperatures brings a very common aliment to light. Frostbite is actually much more common than is thought.

It’s not just the Alaskan dogsledders and Antarctica explorers that get it. When the temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit with a 15 degree wind speed, the result is a wind chill of -19 degrees.

At this temperature, bare skin will start to develop frostbite in about 30 minutes. It’s harder to know how fast covered skin will get frostbite, but be aware that it can and does happen.

You Should Treat Your Feet Like You Do Your Face

You should treat your feet like you do your face. You would never think of not washing your face or brushing your teeth before bed, but how many people really pumice and moisturize their feet properly?

The things that people do to care for their feet may actually do more harm than good. Many people think they are taking care of their feet by going for a pedicure and submerging their feet in water that no one should ever submerge their feet in. The result? Fungal infections.

The expert podiatrists at Advanced Podiatry can guide you in the proper maintenance care and hygiene for your feet.

Overall wellness is directly linked to your level of activity. It’s well documented that those of us who exercise regularly get better quality sleep, have more energy and are more alert during the day.

The average adult should be exercising a recommended 150 minutes each week. Children should be getting at least 60 minutes of exercise daily.

Keeping active is often difficult: busy schedules and demanding jobs limit our time and zap our energy, lingering injuries make it hard to get motivated.

Those old aches and pains make us dread exercise for fear of continued discomfort, re-injury, or developing a new malady. It's wonder then why many of us put the most valuable asset for longevity low on the priority list.
