I love the Steven Curtis Chapman’s song “I am Joseph”. It hits me differently every time I hear it. I can relate to each of the characters in the Christmas story. Today, the lyric that hit me was this:
“And I am Herod in the palace
That my pride can build around me
I start thinking I’m the one and only king
Trying desperately to stay upon a throne
That never did belong to me”
It makes me think....where I am trying to stay in a role, situation or circumstance that isn’t really mine anymore? I was there for a time and that time is over Desperately trying to stay there has consequences....it keeps me from seeing God when He is working right in front of me. I can’t hear the wisdom of the voices that are trying to help guide me, to let me see things differently, and I can’t join in the new thing that’s coming.
Are you in this season? Where is the throne you’re trying to stay on? What role do you let define you to the point that it leads you away from your relationship with God? Is it a job? Maybe a city? Is it your relationship with your children where you need to be more of a consultatnt to your older teen/adult child rather than a parent? What do you you need to let go of to enter this new season? Let’s remember that God has not left us. He is calling us to join Him in each new chapter and experience of our lives. God is with you. God is for you.
“So let’s all gather at the manger
And bring all our hopes and hurts and fears
All our unworthiness and shame
Knowing every one of us is the reason that He came
And God is with us
And God is for us all.
This is our story, this is our song”
Amen.
