Wow... I've never had such a response on FB from the posting of an article. I really appreciate people sharing their experiences with Ritalin (methylphenidate) and I hope this article will finally convince more docs and other practitioners to be judicious in diagnosing ADHD and also offer EKG screening if medication is truly indicated.

I know many people feel medication is always a bad choice but I am not in that camp. Having said this II would estimate that at least half of the kids referred to me on meds for ADHD do not actually meet criteria for the diagnosis.

Again thank you for these very personal responses. As a parent myself I am certain that parents of kids who have had experiences with the MH "system" appreciate each of your posts. You are not alone in your struggles with the broken system!

This is not new info but in my experience it has been widely ignored. There are many studies linking ADHD medications to arrhythmias. A pre-medication EKG has been recommended by many journal articles. Talk to your doctor. If you are one of my patients and have declined the EKG I offered please reconsider. I do not receive any type of compensation for sending kids for EKGs FWIW. - Dr. Tim
