“The Conversation” is a book I wrote offering different ways to help make the conversation about death and dying a little more comfortable to have.

Maybe if we talked about it more freely now, and let the people we love know what our end of life wishes are and how we want to be cared for when that time comes, we could put it aside and live our lives more fully and with a little less worry.

When my brother died, I had no idea what mattered most to him, or how he wanted to be cared for. I wish I had known this information.

Please make time to talk about this with the people you love. It really is one of the most important conversations that we can have.

This is my mom, she died in 1988, she was 51. I was 24. I have not had my mom in my life for 36 years.

I just turned 60. My mom, my dad, my sister, and my brother did not make it to 60. My son’s father and several of my friends did not make it to 60.

A lot happens in 36 years… at the time of her death I was young, I didn’t know what I know now, I had no idea what death meant. We did not have a strong relationship. I didn’t say goodbye to her, I just stared at her as she took her last breath. There are so many things I would have done differently if I only knew then what I know now.

Time has a way of changing your perspective. In my heart, I truly believe that if she was alive, we would have a better relationship now and she would be a really great grandmother to my kids. I don’t get that opportunity. So much of my family has died.

But I keep telling their story, and I keep talking about them because I don’t ever want anyone to forget about them … I will never forget about them. My grief has not softened with time. My grief has increased with time. Grief doesn’t go away.

Be mindful of how you comfort others who are grieving, knowing that their heart will ache for the rest of their life. What they need from you is understanding, compassion, your presence, and love.
