A study to help your own babies and other families here. Please pass along.

Researchers at Marcus Autism Center are conducting a study to learn more about how children grow and learn. During this study, researchers will observe how your baby looks at the world, take pictures of your baby’s brain, and record the early sounds your baby makes.

Good videos of babies with respiratory distress. Older kids often look the same. Stridor is a gasping/Darth Vader inspiratory sound that comes along with croup’s barking cough (go Dawgs btw!!). Finally an end expiratory grunt with most of the breaths kids are making is also a sign of distress and should be seen now..no waiting for any of these signs. Luckily our CHOA friends are open in the ER’s (Arthur Blank btw has gotten excellent reviews from our patients) and Urgent Cares. Check the CHOA website at www.choa.org for holiday hours too this week.

Ugh. Just in time for the holidays. As 5 of our 7 hospitalized children at CHOA currently are in for RSV bronchiolitis, a reminder about RSV and what work of breathing looks like (i will post some videos later today too). Just to make matters more confusing, we are still seeing plenty of walking pneumonia (mycoplasma) and a couple other versions of bronchiolitis and croup. So sick season is definitely here.

A reminder we do not have a test in our office for RSV because insurance often does cover this expensive test or change our treatment plan.

If your baby is under 8mos of age, check with your insurance to see if Beyfortus is covered and get this RSV immunization sooner than later. If you had the RSV immunization while pregnant you do *not* need to give it to your baby bc they were covered prenatally.

They are here! Dottie and Bea made their entrance to lots of love and happiness from Dr McGlamry and her husband yesterday. Excellent weights for 36 week twins at 6 #2 oz and 5 # 3oz respectively. Mom and babies doing well. Daddy working on his arm lifts with two now and Maeve is going to be a super big sister. Congrats to all!

Deaths averted since 1974 thanks to vaccines. Pediatricians *never* want to see these diseases come back to our communities. Dr Hardin definitely saw many tragedies due to HIB and pneumococcal diseases in previously healthy lovely babies in the 90’s and was so thankful for her patients and her daughters when those vaccines came available. We 100% believe in vaccines and since its inception in 1982, our private independently owned group requires children to follow the AAP schedule to be patients of our practice to help protect our families and our community. This is why many of you chose us in the first place! Keeping our patients healthy and following evidence based scientifically proven medicine is #1 in our minds.

If we have parents in the office who have been diagnosed with ADHD, i always ask what their jobs are. Guess what…busy jobs, with lots of things happening at the same time with which their fast paced brains do well….like medical careers!

This! We always make sure a thorough evaluation is done before we move into medication options. But correctly diagnosed and treated ADHD can be life changing.

It’s not “Oh, boys will be boys” or “Oh, she’s just sensitive” or “Oh, he’ll grow out of it” or, “Oh, she’s just a bit of a space cadet”

Unrecognized ADHD can have lifelong impacts on child, family, and society.

There is no reason to worry your child will be over-medicated or over diagnosed….if having significant trouble at school & home it worth talking with a trusted healthcare professional….and it *often* will completely change the trajectory of their life & relationships for the better.

Good advice…boy, every parent (including pediatrician moms and dads) definitely have tried controlling their kids often with 💩💩💩 results just like you guys.

Type-A moms, I see you…

If you’re anything like me, giving up control is hard.

You know the feeling: the need to manage every tantrum, every messy moment, and every defiant “no.”

But here’s the thing: we can’t control our kids. (Trust me, I’ve tried!)

The real game changer came when I stopped focusing on controlling them and started focusing on understanding my responses instead.

And that’s when everything shifted.

Turns out, the way I was reacting to my kids was directly linked to my parenting personality. Once I understood it, I realized my responses were either igniting power struggles or helping diffuse them.
