At Physical Evolution, you may have seen or used our whole body vibration (WBV) machine, also known as a Hypervibe machine. A Hypervibe is a full body vibration platform that provides high frequency vibrations and increases the amount of gravity the body is feeling.

WBV can increase muscle strength, improve bone health, improve balance and coordination, improve circulation, reduce tone and spasticity and stimulate the vestibular system, all at once!

Research shows that WBV can benefit individuals with both low and high tone and has incredible clinical potential for patients with a range of neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, and Spinal Cord Injury.

If you would like to learn how our Hypervibe can help you in your rehab journey, give the clinic a call on 5636 9458.

May 12th has been designated as International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases (CIND) since 1992.

This day recognises a host of diseases that include Fibromyalgia (FM), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS).

The importance of bringing awareness to these complex chronic diseases is that they’re often misunderstood. They are considered invisible diseases where there may not be any visible characteristics and people who live with these conditions can appear physically healthy but are leading debilitating lives.

While electrical stimulation looks and sounds intimidating it is in fact very safe and very effective for rewiring neurological pathways. Electrical stimulation is a well established intervention within neurological rehabilitation.

Here you can see neuromuscular electrical stimulation being used to strengthen a client’s wrist extensor muscles to help with grasping objects.

If you are curious as to how it may benefit you, contact our clinic or send us a message to speak to one of our qualified Exercise Physiologists.

The human body naturally uses small electrical impulses to cause muscles to move. If the body is unable to generate or transmit this nerve signal from the brain to the desired muscle, then the muscle will be unable to move in the desired way.

A Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) device is a piece of technology that applies low-energy electrical impulses to weakened, damaged or paralysed muscles to help improve function, capability and mobility. It works by exciting the lower motor neurons that innervate desired muscles, causing them to contract.

For a person unable to move a muscle due to injury or a condition which has affected the central nervous system, NMES devices can be used to compensate for this deficit. Commonly this therapy is used for stroke and spinal cord injuries, however it has a wide application for many neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy and Multiple Sclerosis.

At Physical Evolution, we use the Multi-Stim Plus system on all parts of the body to increase muscle activation to facilitate every day activities.

Here is a snapshot comparison of Jason using our LiteGait technology in Week 1 and Week 3 of his intensive therapy.

Jason’s ongoing hardwork and dedication resulted in large physiological improvements. By the end of the three weeks he demonstrated:

🔹 Reduced dystonic (involuntary muscle) contractions
🔹 Increased lower limb range of motion
🔹 Improved posture and head control
🔹 Improved coordination of lower limbs
🔹 Increased cardiovascular fitness
🔹 Improved blood pressure
🔹 Improved over mental health and wellbeing

Keep up the great work Jase!

At Physical Evolution, we like to add some excitement into your sessions by using BlazePods. Blazepods are a light-based reflex training system that bring an element of fun to our sessions, offering an engaging way to improve your agility, balance, coordination or reaction time.

Whether you experience difficulties with balance, coordination or complications from mobility, you will benefit by engaging in reaction time training.

Your reaction time is incredibly important for your everyday life. It keeps you safe and ensures that your body is primed to move whenever it needs to. Many every day activities such as walking, cooking and driving, require you to respond to visual stimulus, and ultimately, can be enhanced with reaction time training.

Due to the complex nature of Jason’s dystonia, a neurological condition causing involuntary muscle contractions, he has significant difficulties with controlled movement that impacts his activities of daily living.

In this video, Toby, one of our Exercise Physiologists, is getting Jase to complete a bilateral rowing exercise. He is encouraging Jase to watch, slow down and isolate his arm movements.

Research has shown that individuals with dystonia are able to control co-contractions, or unwanted muscle activations, significantly when visual feedback is provided. By bringing Jase’s attention to a motor activity, and getting him to control and slow it down, he is providing his nervous system with visual feedback and developing his ability to control unwanted muscle contractions.

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change - to remodel, relearn and strengthen connections. It is how we adapt to changing conditions, learn new facts and develop new skills. This is a guiding principle for neurological rehabilitation at Physical Evolution.

Every time you exercise, you get a boost of essential neurotransmitters and proteins along with improved blood flow in the brain. This increase in blood flow stimulates the release of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Research shows that BDNF promotes the survival, maintenance, and growth of nerve cells, which allows your brain to adapt and change.

At Physical Evolution, our practitioners are able to incorporate aerobic exercise into your program, no matter your function or ability. Contact us to find out more.

Gait, a person's walking pattern, depends on a complex interaction from the nervous, musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems.

Gait training is a modality used in physical therapy to help improve your ability to walk. Gait training can help to improve independence in movement and reduce the risk of falls or injury.

At Physical Evolution, our Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists will utilise gait training to assess, alter and improve a person’s ability to stand and walk in alignment. Gait training could involve walking on a treadmill, between parallel bars, or utilising a ceiling hoist or LiteGait system to complete the exercise in a safe environment.

The MOTOmed is a piece of exercise equipment specifically designed to assist the rehabilitation of those with mobility challenges by using movement therapy.

There are a wide range of physical conditions that benefit from MOTOmed therapy including:
🔹 Stroke
🔹 Muscular disorders
🔹 Traumatic brain injuries
🔹 Spastic Paralysis (e.g Cerebral Palsy)
🔹 Parkinsons Disease

Here you can see Ange completing a balance activity whilst pushing a ladder, with assistance from our ceiling hoist.

Balance training is an imperative part of neurological rehabilitation and helps reduce falls, improve posture, and improve locomotor performance. Reduced balance and mobility may limit activities of daily living or participation in the community.

Our team at Physical Evolution are experienced in assessing and managing the balance problems associated with a range of neurological conditions. We can create a individualised program designed to suit your current ability level and your goals, considering factors such as your lifestyle, home environment and medication.

The single arm seated row exercise strengthens the major muscles of the back that are keys in maintaining good posture.

Many individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP) have compromised posture due to abnormal muscle tone and muscle imbalances. Having too much or too little muscle tone may make it challenging to control movements and maintain posture. Compromised posture due to CP may lead to a wide range of other motor impairments.

Exercise interventions targeted at improving posture can:
🔹 Reduce mobility restrictions
🔹 Help manage scoliosis
🔹 Improve respiratory function
🔹 Improve heart function
🔹 Reduce pain
🔹 Improve health and quality of life

Meet D'Shawn. D'Shawn came to us in 2021 and had never received any physical therapy intervention. D'Shawn has significant flexion contractures in his lower legs, so at home he spends most of his time getting around on his knees.

Here you see, D'Shawn with a huge smile on his face using our LiteGait technology over the Gait trainer, with the help of our Exercise Physiologist, Toby, and Physiotherapist, Gisele.

The LiteGait can:
- Increase range of motion and mobility
- Improve circulation
- Improve bone density and muscle health
- Reduce muscle spasms
- Create an enjoyable experience out of the wheelchair
- Provide the ability to take independent steps

We are so proud of D'Shawn's hard work and determination to continue to achieve his goals.
