Similar to other squatting movements, goblet squats mainly work the quads and glutes. You are holding the weight at the front, so the core, lats and upper back muscles will also be working to keep the dumbbell in place while stopping the torso from falling forward

Goblet squats are a great introduction to squatting if you havenโ€™t squatted much before. They help reinforce good technique, while not loading the spine, which is great for those who also suffer from back pain when doing regular barbell squats

Split squats are one of our favorite exercises for the lower body because they have so many benefits:

- Improve strength
- Add muscle mass
- Help with fat loss
- Improve hip and ankle mobility

Some key points to focus on when completing split squats:

- Keep the head in a neutral position by looking straight ahead
- Maintain a neutral spine
- Retract the shoulder blades
- Brace the abs

Benefits can vary depending on how you program the exercise into your workout, and also how you modify the movement to target certain muscle groups.

Minerals are the other subset of micronutrients that are needed in our diets. Like vitamins, minerals are found in the body in small amounts and essential for bodily function. Minerals are also found in a variety of fruit and vegetables as well as meat and dairy products.

Therefore eating a balanced diet from all 5 food groups is important for ensuring youโ€™re eating enough minerals. Certain minerals are fortified in our water or in our everyday foods such as fluorine, iodine and calcium. Supplementation of minerals like vitamins is not necessary unless you have an identified deficiency.

Overconsumption of minerals can also cause toxicity in the body and be harmful.

In my early days I trained with some amazing athletes and coaches who had trained at westside

I really noticed an improvement in my overall strength as well as my athletic performance from using methods utilized by westside barbell, especially the box squat

So even now my programming is heavily influenced by these guys and these types of movements. I always find myself gravitating back to this movement in particular

Benefits of the Box Squat:

- It helps minimize the stretch reflex, a natural response that occurs in the body. Minimizing this at times can really help improve strength

- Itโ€™s a great tool for teaching people how to squat, as it is an excellent way of teaching people how to use their hips when squatting

- And therefore itโ€™s a great way to target the glutes and posterior chain

Vitamins are one subset of the micronutrients needed in out diet. Vitamins are found in the body in small amounts and are essential for our bodies to maintain healthy and keep optimal function. There are varieties of vitamins that are found in an abundance of fruit and vegetables. The most effective way to ensure youโ€™re eating a diet rich in all vitamins is to eat the rainbow and consume a variety of foods from all 5 food groups. Supplementation of vitamins should only be necessary if you have an identified deficiency. Some of our everyday food items are fortified with vitamins such as thiamine In bread. Water soluble vitamins specifically are unable to be stored in the body for long periods of time and therefore excess consumption via supplementation only resorts in the vitamins being filtered out of our bodies via our urine output. Over-consumption of some vitamins such as vitamin D and vitamin A can also cause toxicity in large doses.

Aside from the benefits of overhead pressing,ย the landmine press can also increase your core stability and anti-rotational strength. Because you're pressing the weight with one arm, and your body is inherently imbalanced from either a standing or kneeling position, your core muscles will have to stay braced throughout to prevent your torso from rotating helping to improve your core stability.

So here is a list of things to consider when completing these movements so that you make sure you are properly execute them and getting the most out of your efforts.

Make sure your feet are flat and grasping the floor. So many people try and combine upper body pushing movements with their feet in the air and personally I believe for most people this isnโ€™t the best way to perform these movement. Especially when looking to improve your strength and increase your muscle mass.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Even though you are lying on a bench itโ€™s vital that you still brace the abdominal wall and create tension through your body. From your legs, to your abdominals, and then all the way up to your hands create tension.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Part of this will come from the retraction and depression of the shoulder blades. What does this mean? Squeeze the shoulder blades back and down to keep the upper back tight!

As I said, all of this will help create tension in the body and a solid base to press from. Think of the foundations of a house or building. The stronger the base the more you can add on top.

The incline press is one of the most commonly used exercises in any gym and for good reason.

It is great for building upper body strength and increasing muscle mass. Itโ€™s a compound movement so it involves more than one joint. This means that rather than just the chest working, we also get the shoulders and triceps involved as well. Bang for buck is always a massive plus if you donโ€™t want to spend every minute of your life in the gym!

Love hate relationship between Bulgarian split squats. Can be one of the most brutal exercises out there with a slow tempo or high reps. Great substitution for a squat if you have issues with weights on your back.

When looking to combat injuries we always advise a healthy dose of unilateral work, or in other words, exercises that work one leg or one arm.

Think movements like a single-leg squat or a one-arm overhead press. The list of unilateral exercises really is endless. Some other common ones which are often overlook as being unilateral are dumbbell presses, split squats and step-ups.
