KNOW PAIN KNOW GAIN
A nice little nugget to pass on today. What is pain? "A perceptual inference, whereby the experience is considered an output into consciousness that reflects the best guess estimate of what will be an advantageous response. The tendency will usually be to err on the side of protection" (Moseley and Butler, 2015) .
Pain exists when your credible evidence of danger to your body is greater than your credible evidence of safety. Pain does not exist when your credible evidence of safety to your body is greater than your credible evidence of danger🤔
Some examples of credible evidence of danger- being told a diagnosis that sounds really bad without really knowing what it means, going to the place where you first injured yourself, hearing 'there is nothing wrong with you so your pain is probably not real'
Some examples of credible evidence of safety- making an appointment to see a health professional, knowing that you are not the only person going through a similar situation, loving support from those in your life, being aware and updated with all the recent studies and research as a proven path for recovery.

Pain is a very personal thing, "it's what it means to that person," pain is what the person says hurts, it is what the person describes and feels as pain. No other person can experience the pain, know what it feels like or how it really affects the person physically and emotionally, because they are not them. We are different people with different memories, past experiences, knowledge and understanding. We are here to help, we believe you and want to help you get moving and feeling better. Help you understand your pain.

Undoubtedly, Mums deserve to be celebrated because they’re always putting others ahead of themselves. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to stop and reflect on all of her hard work.

Of course, Mother’s Day isn’t just a day for celebrating your own mother. It’s a day for honouring all the women in your life who support and nurture you, from your sister to your grandmother.

There’s nothing like a mother’s love to give us all the strength we need to succeed. Thanks for everything, Mums.

You may not think about your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) much, but you use them a lot. The joints connect your jawbone to your skull. Your TMJ springs into action each time you talk, chew, and swallow.

Here are some great exercises to try if you have trouble relaxing your jaw
----
➡️Relaxed jaw exercise
Rest your tongue gently on the top of your mouth behind your upper front teeth. Allow your teeth to come apart while relaxing your jaw muscles. ➡️Goldfish exercises (full opening)
Keeping your tongue on the roof of your mouth, place one finger on your TMJ and another finger on your chin. Drop your lower jaw completely and back. For a variation of this exercise, place one finger on each TMJ as you completely drop your lower jaw and back. Do this exercise six times to complete one set. You should complete one set six times daily. ➡️Side-to-side jaw movement
Slowly move your jaw from side to side. .

Jaw pain? Ever had a clicky jaw, been told by your dentist that you grind or clench your teeth? Constant headaches? You might be having some symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. A lot of people wouldn't even think that they could have their jaw treated by a Physio. But there are lots of things we can do for you.
---------
Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:
➡️Pain or tenderness of your jaw
➡️Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
➡️Aching pain in and around your ear
➡️Difficulty chewing or pain/ clicking while chewing
➡️Aching facial pain
➡️Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
➡️Headaches
➡️Clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew
-------
3 Ways Stress Can Cause TMJ Dysfunction:
- Bruxism: repeated sideways movements of the jaw
- Clenching: tightening and loosening of the jaw
- Grinding/Chewing: repeated chaotic movement of teeth-on-teeth
------
Contact us today if you have any questions about the treatment of TMJ conditions.

✅KNEE ROCKING FOR LOWER BACK PAIN✅
This is a great exercise for the lower back! It reactivates core muscles and gently mobilises the lumbar spine. It also assists with reducing muscle spasm and calms the back in an acute episode
-------
➡️Lie on a mat/floor or bed, with your knees bent to 90 degs and your feet flat on the surface you're on.
➡️Rock your knees slowly sideways to the floor, and then slowly back to neutral. Then rock them slowly to the other side and back.
➡️Try to keep your feet flat as you do the exercise.
➡️ Repeat this movement 20 times or until you feel like you have more range or less discomfort. ✅You can do this exercise morning and night.

When you have experienced a persisting injury, it's common to hold on to feelings of resentment and even hatred towards a limb/body part. It's all in the language and thoughts, thoughts are real and "how you feel about a limb is intimately related to its immune function and blood flow.” Your brain senses threat and danger in the limb that you hate, and by doing so it's overprotecting you by creating pain and not only that, actually restricts your blood flow and healing properties, therefore hindering you getting better. Aren't our brains amazing.

We need to start loving our injuries and bodies, or at least attempt to change the language we use to describe them. "I'm broken", "My body is falling apart", "I have a dodgy/shocking knee/ankle/shoulder". How about, "it's a work in progress", " I've been struggling but I'm here to get better", "Sore but safe".

This years campaign theme is:
Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.
-------
Imagine a gender equal world.
A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.
A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality.
Collectively we can all .
------
So strike the IWD pose with your arms crossed to show your commitment to calling out bias, smashing stereotypes, breaking inequality, and rejecting discrimination.

Low back pain refers to pain in the area between your lowest ribs (around your waist) and your bottom.
----
With all this time indoors 🌧I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of you out there have started to complain of a niggly back. You're not alone.
----
Be reassured that the majority of back pain is not serious and will resolve. Low back pain has multiple contributors including psychological factors, social factors, biophysical factors, comorbidities, and pain-processing mechanisms.

How has your body been feeling lately? Are you tired? Has it been asking you to slow down?

What is your typical response when your body lets you know that it's tired? In our society, it's very common for people to habitually push through fatigue. Just have an extra cup of coffee, eat something sugary to give you a temporary kick, or drink a high-voltage energy drink, rather than slowing down or resting. After all, getting things done is more important—or at least that's what almost everyone tends to think.

What would happen to everything that's on your to-do list if you ended up in the hospital?
-Sadly, this isn't even a "crazy" question, as if you push your body for long enough without rest, there is a high probability that you will get sick or have an accident.

It's ok to step back, take a break, say "no", and delegate. When your life is spent rushing from one thing to another there is very little time, space or energy for creativity, inspiration, or truly useful problem solving and planning.

Don't miss out on what's most important by being afraid to slow down. Please, listen to your body. Truly, you won't go wrong if you do.

SELF MASSAGE AT HOME WITH BALL🥎
Feeling tension in your neck and shoulders? Here we show you how to use a massage ball to release some myofascial trigger points (tender muscle spots) around the shoulder blade.

A trigger point is a tender spot within your muscle. People often describe them as “knots”—a bundle of tense, contracted muscle that twitches and spreads pain when pressed or moved. When the pain spreads, that’s called referred pain. For example, a trigger point might be in your shoulder but shoot pain up your neck when prodded **NB don't have a massage ball, no worries! You can use any old tennis ball that's lying around the house**

Do you experience shoulder pain? Do you experience symptoms like slipping, jamming, catching, instability, giving way and dead arm? Have you woken up with pain in your shoulder after sleeping funny? Had persisting pains for months with no idea how they started and why they won’t go away? Does this sounds like you... then keep reading, you are not alone!
We treat presentations like this daily and the good news is you don't have to be in pain anymore!
Our team of experienced physiotherapists at Mediphysio will take you through a thorough examination and assess any contributing factors of shoulder pain.
***
Some of these may include; age, gender, dominant shoulder vs symptomatic shoulder, occupation, sporting history, type of symptoms, aggravating activities, history of onset of pain etc.
***
There unfortunately isn't a one size fits all exercise program when it comes to the shoulder. Often we see clients performing exercises incorrectly or with too much load and actually aggravating some conditions of the shoulder more. We always recommend a physical examination with a professional to make sure you receive a tailored program specific to your shoulder and your functional needs.

Come and have your shoulder assessed by one of our team today!
