WHY DOES MY BACK HURT?

Many people experience back pain.

Some people have low back pain, others feel it in their middle back or in their shoulders.

Frozen shoulder is a Western medical term used to describe extreme shoulder pain.

Predictably, back pain presents when people reach their middle years, but today in our practice, we see back pain present in younger people - as young as twenty-two.

Lifestyle, posture, organ health - they can all contribute to making our back hurt.

OUR FOUNDATION IS IN OUR SPINE

The cervical spine is made up of 7 vertebrae. The first two, C1 and C2, are highly specialized and are given unique names: atlas and axis, respectively.

C3-C7 are more classic vertebrae, having a body, pedicles, laminae, spinous processes, and facet joints.

Sometimes back pain results from disease, like cervical spondylosis.

Discs and other cartilages experience degeneration leading to the growth of osteophytes on the bones.

Some of the symptoms of cervical spondylosis include neck stiffness, grinding noise when turning your neck, a sense of weakness and pain in the shoulder.

Degeneration in the spine can create blockages in the fourth, fifth and sixth vertebra and result in tenderness, stiffness and persistent back pain.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of inflammatory and autoimmune disorder that can have a severe impact on our quality of life on a day-to-day basis. This long-term chronic disease disrupts our body’s immune system, causing it to target the bones in and around the spine and sometimes in other large joints.

Over time, as the body tries to repair itself, new bones form around the vertebrae and eventually fuse together, affecting the flexibility of the spine with symptoms like pain and inflammation.

Gynecological disease, prostrate disease, kidney disease, liver and heart disease can all cause back pain.

And finally, respiratory diseases such as pleural adhesions, lung cancer and tuberculosis also result in back pain.
