is a day created by the World Health Organization (WHO) to bring awareness of the global impact that hearing loss has. Today, we want to share the WHO’s 2024 key messages for World Hearing Day to help spread the word:
1. Globally, over 80% of ear and hearing care needs remain unmet.
2. Unaddressed hearing loss poses an annual cost of nearly US$1 trillion globally.
3. Deeply ingrained societal misperceptions and stigmatizing mindsets are key factors that limit efforts for preventing and addressing hearing loss.
4. Changing mindsets related to ear and hearing care is crucial to improving access and mitigating the cost of unaddressed hearing loss.

We thought we would take International Cochlear Implant Day as an opportunity to discuss one of the biggest misunderstandings surrounding hearing loss in our society. Despite what many people think, hearing loss affects ALL ages... not just older adults. Babies can even be born with hearing loss that ranges from mild to profound in degree. For children born with or who acquire profound hearing loss, cochlear implantation is one of the options families are presented with for management. Cochlear implants are incredible technology that allow families who choose oral communication (aka spoken communication) for their child to access sound and develop typical speech and language skills. Incredible!

Do you know which one is the lie?!

It’s A! There is currently no medication, pill, vitamin or supplement that is shown to get rid of tinnitus … so be careful what you read (or feel tempted to buy) on the internet!

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat physicians), properly programmed hearing aids (with or without sound therapy) and counselling (such as cognitive behavioural therapy or tinnitus retraining therapy) are the only management options available that are shown to significantly improve bothersome tinnitus!

Living with tinnitus and/or sound intolerance can feel isolating. We offer small group sessions hosted by Registered Audiologist and tinnitus expert from Vancouver, Glynnis Tidball at least four times per year at our Kelowna clinic. This group session is designed to provide extended time to learn about various tinnitus and sound sensitivity management options as well as provide the unique opportunity to connect with others who are also suffering from tinnitus and/or sound intolerance disorders.
