FAF images are valuable for the diagnosis of GA. The pigment in the RPE cells sends physiological ā€œautofluorescenceā€ if properly stimulated. This physiologic fundus fluorescence (isoautofluorescence or normoautofluorescence) increases when pigment phagocytosis and lipofuscin formation are ongoing (hyperautofluorescence). The absence of fluorescence (hypoautofluorescence) is due to the complete loss of metabolic activity of the RPE cells. Read on this editorial by Eric H.
