💃🏽💃🏽I’m feeling excited today because over 7000 Paediatricians are gathering from all parts of Nigeria for the Annual Conference.

And my product/business will be there on a special exhibition stand again!

As God has always done it in previous medical exhibitions and conferences, we don’t go back home with any left over units.
This time around, our story would be better.

Facebook also reminds me that exactly this day, 4 years ago, we were also at honored as Unilever Young Entrepreneur Awards in London.

And the way I felt today at the Prince Philip House doesn’t defer much from the way I felt in 2019.

Same thing happened- walked into a hall of very top level executives and corporations in the UK, finding this same woman with a blue box in the room with everyone asking her what the blue box does; and in her soothing and confident voice, she says

“The is a solar powered portable phototherapy device that treats jaundice in newborn babies regardless of their access to electricity or healthcare delivery”.

Every hospital needs if they really do care about their babies🙏🏾

Please share my story with them, you’ll be saving a baby.

In Nigeria, we still have babies who develop cerebral palsy and even die as a result of severe Neonatal jaundice that was not noticed early or properly treated.

The usual scenario we encounter, is a woman who delivered a healthy baby at a traditional birth attendant's place, returns to the same place when jaundice is noticed, and they're given syrup ampiclox and glucose water by their traditional birth attendant or usually these mothers remain at home and apply breastmilk to their baby's eyes or give glucose water as recommended by neighbours or older mothers.. All wrong information and myths handed down by generations of mothers.

Surprisingly, we have seen educated parents also make this mistake, and end up with a child who has disabilities. Many parents have not heard about neonatal jaundice.

They only present to the hospital when their baby begins to gasps for air or having abnormal body movements such as windmill movement. Although we are able to salvage some, morbidity and mortality from Neonatal jaundice can be prevented.

At Yellow alert foundation, we embarked on periodic training and capacity building of parents, nurses, students and traditional birth attendants at the grassroots on the identification of neonatal jaundice using an easy to use, locally made icterometer and the need for prompt referral to a hospital where baby can be properly assessed and treated.

We hope that our efforts will yield fruits soon and mortality and morbidity from neonatal jaundice will begin to reduce with an improvement in our neonatal mortality indices...
