Navigating grief can be so challenging, especially during the holidays. Here are some tips that may help...

~Setting boundaries can help during the hustle and bustle of holiday events, and social situations. If you are feeling overwhelmed, don't be afraid to say no to preserve your well-being.

~Creating new traditions can be a nice way to look towards the positivity of the future.

~Honoring old traditions & memories can help preserve and honor the past.

~Developing healthy coping skills can help when emotions get heavy. Taking deep breaths, meditating, or going for a walk are just a few ways to cope in a healthy way.

~Ask for help from a therapist, counselor or loved one. Talking through tough emotions of grief, and feeling heard is crucial. You don't have to do this alone.

How do different attachment styles may behave in conflict?

Secure Attachment: You’re able to maintain your emotional balance and seek healthy ways to manage conflict.

Anxious Attachment: You may find it difficult to observe boundaries, viewing space as a threat, something that can provoke panic, anger, or fear in a conflict situation.

Avoidant Attachment: You may choose flight over fight when conflict arises, and you may choose to keep distance to protect yourself emotionally.

Disorganized Attachment: You may come off insensitive, selfish, controlling, and untrusting, which can lead to explosive or even abusive behavior in conflict. You can be just as hard on yourself as you are on others.

The Levels of Self Care are a helpful way to give yourself some structure for coping skills. Even if you know a million coping skills, it can feel really overwhelming and hard to access them when you're feeling distressed! You can use the Levels of Self Care to make this process a lot less overwhelming.

The goal of the Levels is to work through each level in order, before moving up to the next one. This can help you feel empowered to manage distress and know that the supports you're seeking out match up with what will be most helpful to you in that moment.

Have you heard of Content Anxiety vs. Process Anxiety? We often just talk about anxiety, but there are so many different kinds of anxiety, and different coping skills are helpful for different types.

Content Anxiety is basically that anxiety that is fairly time limited, like nervousness before a job interview. Once the interview is over, the anxiety starts to resolve. Sure you might still be wondering what happens next. But you're no longer anxious about the interview, because it's over!

Content Anxiety is usually about problem-solving. Once you solve or get through the problem, the anxiety can go down.

Process Anxiety is a bit different. With Process Anxiety, the problem isn't time limited. Maybe it's vague, or ongoing, or existential. The solution to the problem could be in the future or in the past... or simply out of your control. When it comes to Process Anxiety, typical problem-solving isn't going to work! That's because the thing we think is the problem isn't the actual problem here. The only problem we can address with Process Anxiety is the anxiety itself. So now it's time to think about coping, grounding, and relaxation skills.
