This was an extraordinary birth. ☀️
What a way to transition back into doula life after being a theater techie for a month on tour. 🚛

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little in love with all my clients. I NEVER remember to take a photo together. 📸
Thank you for asking me to join you on camera. Also, how did you look so good after so many hours of labor? You're amazing. 👏

More than that, thank you for choosing me to be part of your incredible journey.

But the journey doesn't stop the moment this photo was taken, and neither does our partnership. I wonder if I woke me neighbors when I shouted, "YES YES YES! BABY'S BACK AT BIRTH WEIGHT!!"

I know you're tired, but you're doing great.

Me, a couple of nights ago, after a birth, contemplating big life choices. What is it about birthdays that make me reflect so deeply on where I am in life and where I want to be?

I feel similarly in my job. Each birth comes with huge insight, and I often can't sleep afterwards, even when I'm exhausted.

As my own birthday approaches, I find myself asking big questions.
The enormity of life.

While they're in labor, my clients often long for the sleep they expect to get after their baby arrives. Often they tell me they couldn't sleep the first night, no matter how tired they are. No wonder!

I've had a rough couple of days. Lots going on emotionally. What did the universe send me? Unsolicited updates and baby pictures from families I've worked with!

Yes, Baby, find those toes! Yes, smile and laugh at your Mama and make silly faces! Yes, Baby, explore those supplemental solids! But the thing that lights me up the most is hearing from that mom that she's doing well and finding her stride.

I love my life.
Even when things seem hard.

Keep. Going.

Working with nurses who really GET it is the BEST! Thanks Luci and Naava and Katya - it was great working in partnership with you! Thank you Harlem Hospital for a good first experience. You surprised me.

Please take care of my new mom and her new baby for me - I can't be there 24/7, as much as I might want to.

Did someone say 9am scheduled cesarean with doula support in the OR? 9PM, and the OR is finally ready for us. That's what happens sometimes when it's not an emergency... Good thing my client (and her whole team) has a scene of humor. A positive mindset is invaluable. ✨️

Backstage in braids!

What does that look like as a doula?

LOTS of communication and teamwork. On-call bag in the wings, and my team prepped in case I need yo jump out.

Last week, that's exactly what happened. There's nothing like overhearing a guy on the tech crew explaining to someone else, "No, man, Genevieve has to leave, her client is in labor and they need her."

Mount Sinai West, it's been a while.
Proud to use my NYC issued CDI (Citywide Doula Initiative) ID on arrival. The security guard goes, "What, you don't have a state issued ID?"
I explained about CDI through the mayor's office, and how it's designed to help combat the maternal mortality and morbidity crisis, how it disproportionately affects women of color, and how my coordinator requested we start showing these city issued ID cards to normalize them.
It ended with, "Thanks for keeping my community safe." And a VIP welcome when I re-entered after getting food.

It's hard to say goodbye! I've been with this family longer than almost any family I've worked with, and I'm so proud of how well they're all doing! Look at this chunky, well-fed, happy baby. Look at these smiling parents.
This is also my final postpartum family for a while — I'm committing myself fully to being a birth doula.

I had already announced the change when I met Diana , who was moving from London while pregnant. As a long-time ex-pat, I'm a sucker for an international, world traveling family. Diana, it was an honor to be on this journey with you. You are doing a GREAT job of listening to your baby. Your postpartum recovery is awesome to watch. I've loved watching you learn to balance taking care of your baby and taking care of yourself. And having fun along the way! And being kind to yourself as you work through challenging things.

While I love supporting families postpartum, my strength seems to lie in birth support.
Who knows what the future will hold, but I look forward to being more available to my birth clients. And there's another career step in the works, but more on that soon!

For now, I wish you well and look forward to the occasional photo update!

I'm up way earlier than normal, and not for a birth.
(Also not coming from an overnight...)

When in doubt, shirt always comes through. Oxytocin earrings help too.

I guess it's the last day I can pretend it's Halloween! I brought my Tigger costume with me to two places, and it hasn't yet worked out to wear it. Maybe next year.
