“The United States has the highest first-day death rate in the industrialized world. An estimated 11,300 newborn babies die each year in the United States on the day they are born. This is 50 percent more first-day deaths than all other industrialized countries combined.”
Don't tell me that home birth is better for the mother but worse for the baby. That's just not true.

The U.S. is a worse place for newborns than 68 other countries, including Egypt, Turkey and Peru, according to a report released Tuesday by Save the Children.A million babies die every year globally on the same day they were born, including more than 11,000 American newborns, the report estimates. 🌻Here at Jamaa, we firmly believe in affordable access to risk-appropriate care. If you're a low-risk woman, research has proven that it is safer for you to receive care from a low-risk provider, a Midwife, preferably in a low-risk or low-intervention environment such as a birth center or home birth setting. Please note that having a Midwife does not mean that you have to experience a non-medicated birth. If you'd like an epidural or other pain medications, you can still receive this as a low-risk woman, birthing with a Midwife, in a hospital, if you wish.

🌻If you're a medically high-risk expectant woman, research has proven that it is then safer for you to receive care from a high-risk provider, an OB who is a trained surgeon skilled in managing risks and health complications in pregnancy. If you're considered high-risk and depending on what your risks are in pregnancy, there is still opportunity to limit medications and interventions in labor with the priority in mind of keeping mother-baby safe, thriving and healthy. ✨Being high-risk doesn’t mean that you have to subdue to the cascade of all medical interventions, meaning, you can still possibly have a low-intervention birth in a hospital setting.

🌻When expecting women, are not receiving risk-appropriate care with the right provider, then morbidity and mortality instances as well as poor birth experiences and outcomes rises, significantly. Currently, "Approximately 85 percent of pregnant women are considered to have a low-risk pregnancy, according to the CDC, but 98 percent of births happen in hospitals, meaning there is a huge group of pregnant women—83 percent of them—who could be safely giving birth in their home or birth centers but are not.”

🌻The above mentioned is one of the main reasons for our increasingly high morbidity and mortality rates in the US. Other countries such as the UK and Canada provide risk appropriate care by providing Midwives to all low-risk women and ONLY using Physicians when it is medically indicated. Because of this, they have amazingly better birth outcomes than the US.

🌻Jamaa is integrated into the Maternal Health system in St. Louis and we provide safe, sacred, risk-appropriate care. Our goal is to ensure that every low-risk woman knows her options for the appropriate birthing provider and to ensure access to risk-appropriate care.
