Sorry for the very late post but “This one hit me hard”!

“My dear sista midwife Claudia Booker was the owner, midwife and doula of Birthing Hands Midwifery and Birth Services. She was a revolutionary midwife. I will miss my smart and amazing friend”. •

“She was most definitely down for the cause”. ~ Afua

Our DMV birth community mourns the loss of Midwife Claudia Booker of Birthing Hands Midwifery and Birth Services. I met Claudia in my Spinning Babies training this past December and admired her background, vast knowledge about birth, charisma, and fierceness! Claudia was a force and champion for people with her fiery passion for justice, truth, and optimal health for birthing families-especially Black, Brown and marginalized families. I was sad to find out she was sick during that time and even more sad to learn of her passing. I wish her family love and strength during this difficult time and pray for the spirit and legacy of Claudia live on in all those whose lives she touched. 🖤
The birth world just lost an incredible light. Claudia Booker of Birthing Hands Midwifery and Birth Services, pictured here in the front center, has passed on from this earthly realm.

For an idea of how amazing Claudia was, we want to share these words from attorney and birth advocate Hermine Hayes-Klein:

“...Claudia was a judge in Washington, DC, before she heard her calling as a midwife and doula in middle age. After supporting a teen through her hospital birth, Claudia went to her beloved OB/Gyn’s retirement party. He sat her down, closed the door, and said, ‘Claudia, when I saw you at the hospital supporting that woman through birth, I’ve never seen you so happy.’ She cried and quit her judgeship, and she retrained as a midwife.

Claudia didn’t suffer fools gladly. She was as funny as she was fierce. She knew how to use her voice. She said things other people didn’t say. She was very brilliant and had insights into birth, race, and politics that others don’t have. She was very brave. She had the kind of charisma that draws the attention to her in the room. She was a star.

...Thank you, wise beautiful woman, for blessing the Earth with your time here.”

Claudia Booker, of Birthing Hands Midwifery and Birth Services, has journeyed on to the next chapter. ❤ I only ever met her in person a few times, not knowing her very well, but her work as a deeply rooted passion. She was dedicated to systemic change and accessible home birth options, especially for Black families. Her local services supported the DC/MD/VA communities. With this work of birth, we all cease our time on Earth at some point. May the legacies continue and the warmth be dispersed to all who may need during this time of grief.

🌻Here at Jamaa, we firmly believe in affordable access to risk-appropriate care. If you're a low-risk woman, research has proven that it is safer for you to receive care from a low-risk provider, a Midwife, preferably in a low-risk or low-intervention environment such as a birth center or home birth setting. Please note that having a Midwife does not mean that you have to experience a non-medicated birth. If you'd like an epidural or other pain medications, you can still receive this as a low-risk woman, birthing with a Midwife, in a hospital, if you wish.

🌻If you're a medically high-risk expectant woman, research has proven that it is then safer for you to receive care from a high-risk provider, an OB who is a trained surgeon skilled in managing risks and health complications in pregnancy. If you're considered high-risk and depending on what your risks are in pregnancy, there is still opportunity to limit medications and interventions in labor with the priority in mind of keeping mother-baby safe, thriving and healthy. ✨Being high-risk doesn’t mean that you have to subdue to the cascade of all medical interventions, meaning, you can still possibly have a low-intervention birth in a hospital setting.

🌻When expecting women, are not receiving risk-appropriate care with the right provider, then morbidity and mortality instances as well as poor birth experiences and outcomes rises, significantly. Currently, "Approximately 85 percent of pregnant women are considered to have a low-risk pregnancy, according to the CDC, but 98 percent of births happen in hospitals, meaning there is a huge group of pregnant women—83 percent of them—who could be safely giving birth in their home or birth centers but are not.”

🌻The above mentioned is one of the main reasons for our increasingly high morbidity and mortality rates in the US. Other countries such as the UK and Canada provide risk appropriate care by providing Midwives to all low-risk women and ONLY using Physicians when it is medically indicated. Because of this, they have amazingly better birth outcomes than the US.

🌻Jamaa is integrated into the Maternal Health system in St. Louis and we provide safe, sacred, risk-appropriate care. Our goal is to ensure that every low-risk woman knows her options for the appropriate birthing provider and to ensure access to risk-appropriate care.
