Our DMV birth community mourns the loss of Midwife Claudia Booker of Birthing Hands Midwifery and Birth Services. I met Claudia in my Spinning Babies training this past December and admired her background, vast knowledge about birth, charisma, and fierceness! Claudia was a force and champion for people with her fiery passion for justice, truth, and optimal health for birthing families-especially Black, Brown and marginalized families. I was sad to find out she was sick during that time and even more sad to learn of her passing. I wish her family love and strength during this difficult time and pray for the spirit and legacy of Claudia live on in all those whose lives she touched. 🖤
The birth world just lost an incredible light. Claudia Booker of Birthing Hands Midwifery and Birth Services, pictured here in the front center, has passed on from this earthly realm.
For an idea of how amazing Claudia was, we want to share these words from attorney and birth advocate Hermine Hayes-Klein:
“...Claudia was a judge in Washington, DC, before she heard her calling as a midwife and doula in middle age. After supporting a teen through her hospital birth, Claudia went to her beloved OB/Gyn’s retirement party. He sat her down, closed the door, and said, ‘Claudia, when I saw you at the hospital supporting that woman through birth, I’ve never seen you so happy.’ She cried and quit her judgeship, and she retrained as a midwife.
Claudia didn’t suffer fools gladly. She was as funny as she was fierce. She knew how to use her voice. She said things other people didn’t say. She was very brilliant and had insights into birth, race, and politics that others don’t have. She was very brave. She had the kind of charisma that draws the attention to her in the room. She was a star.
...Thank you, wise beautiful woman, for blessing the Earth with your time here.”

Claudia Booker, of Birthing Hands Midwifery and Birth Services, has journeyed on to the next chapter. ❤ I only ever met her in person a few times, not knowing her very well, but her work as a deeply rooted passion. She was dedicated to systemic change and accessible home birth options, especially for Black families. Her local services supported the DC/MD/VA communities. With this work of birth, we all cease our time on Earth at some point. May the legacies continue and the warmth be dispersed to all who may need during this time of grief.
