Great ways to increase language, participate in social skills, imitate actions, and tacting with your child while doing an at home activity on this rainy weekend.

💗SAVE this post if you’re looking for an activity to do with your child or if you have a little baker!

Baking is a fun way to help increase your child's speech and language skills! This is also a great way to help your child explore food.

I've highlighted 6 skills you can target during this activity:

🔹VERBS
🔹REQUESTING
🔹PREPOSITIONS
🔹DIRECTIONS
🔹LABELING
🔹TURN TAKING

💬What do you think your child would like to bake? Have you tried working on any of these skills yet? Comment below and make sure to share this with other families as well!

The goal of using behavior tools is NOT blind compliance. We don’t want our kids to be little robots without a backbone. 🤖

We want our kids to be able to stand up for themselves, so we can teach them how to do that appropriately starting right now at home. It is okay for our kids to want to refuse something. It is not okay for them to have extreme tantrums because of it. It’s our job to teach them to refuse in a better way.

1️⃣ Teach them to refuse appropriately. Its acceptable for them to say: “Can I have one more minute?” “Can I do it later?” “I don’t want to.” “I want to do it this way.”

2️⃣ Prioritize the instructions and give controlled choices. Save the must-dos for things that really really need to happen. Everything else- give your child options. Give them a say in how it’s going to go and let them have a voice in what that will look like.

3️⃣ Decrease the response effort. Think of ways to make everyday instructions easier to follow. Decrease the amount of effort it takes your kids to follow your typical instructions. Move stuff around in your house, add visuals, give prompts- whatever you can to make it easier.

4️⃣ Give positive reinforcement for following instructions OR refusing nicely.

Thumbs up Thursday!

Such great information on visual schedules. Most of our learners love their schedules. It can give them a chance to be independent and assist with transitions throughout their class, session, or day.

The more we are able to use picture schedules, the more opportunities for growth and generalization our learners will have. Head to the blog for a great overview of picture schedule ideas from Heather!
