Astigmatism is a condition that results from an irregular shape of the cornea or lens. Instead of being perfectly round, the eyeβs surface is more oval-shaped, causing light to scatter unevenly as it enters the eye. This leads to distorted or blurred vision at all distances.
Common signs include frequent headaches, eye strain, squinting, and difficulty seeing clearly at night. Many people with astigmatism also report visual fatigue, especially after reading or working on a screen for extended periods. Astigmatism can occur alongside myopia or hyperopia and may develop gradually. Fortunately, it is correctable with specially designed glasses, toric contact lenses, or laser eye surgery. An optometrist can diagnose this condition through a routine refraction test.
