Astigmatism is a condition that results from an irregular shape of the cornea or lens. Instead of being perfectly round, the eye’s surface is more oval-shaped, causing light to scatter unevenly as it enters the eye. This leads to distorted or blurred vision at all distances.

Common signs include frequent headaches, eye strain, squinting, and difficulty seeing clearly at night. Many people with astigmatism also report visual fatigue, especially after reading or working on a screen for extended periods. Astigmatism can occur alongside myopia or hyperopia and may develop gradually. Fortunately, it is correctable with specially designed glasses, toric contact lenses, or laser eye surgery. An optometrist can diagnose this condition through a routine refraction test.

Short-sightedness (myopia) and long-sightedness (hyperopia) are two common refractive errors that affect how light is focused on the retina. People who are short-sighted can see close objects clearly but struggle with distant vision. This condition occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina.

Conversely, long-sighted individuals can see distant objects more clearly but have difficulty focusing on things up close. Hyperopia happens when the eyeball is too short or the cornea lacks sufficient curvature, leading light to focus behind the retina. Both conditions are easily corrected with prescription glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. Regular eye exams ensure that prescriptions remain accurate and any shifts in vision are promptly addressed.
