Humanoids are, without a doubt, the ultimate dog enthusiasts. And let’s face it, they really don’t need us at all. Just like they don’t require clean air, water, or soil.

Yet, there's still a flicker of hope! Change begins with you and me. So why not cut back on processed foods—for both you and your furry friends? After all, cooking isn’t exactly a rocket science.

But hey, if you want to keep feeding them that mystery meat in a can, who are we to judge?

The continuous drive for advancement undeniably leads to increased sales, propelling the Petcare division to one of the top two revenue generators for the entire global group (source: https://www.nestle.com/investors/annual-report/facts-figures). However, one must question whether this advancement translates to enhanced quality and better health for our beloved dogs. An alarming yearly trend emerges from official records (and what may be lurking beneath the surface is anyone's guess) - Purina recalls thousands of tons of pet food worldwide. The reasons behind these recalls are diverse, ranging from the presence of plastic fragments (source: https://www.petful.com/brands/purina/) to issues like mislabeling and potential salmonella contamination.

Lick, lick, lick goes your dog. Tick, tick, tick goes your clock. If everyone in this house doesn’t hurry up and get to sleep, in the morning you’re all going to feel sick, sick, sick.

Sometimes, dogs don’t get enough zzzs to please. When your dog’s restless nights are keeping you awake, here are some tips that can help both of you get some shut-eye.

- Make a nice bed. How would you like to sleep on the floor every night? If you don’t have a good dog bed, a soft blanket or large pillow will work wonders too.
- Plan for bathroom breaks. Always let your pooch out before you bed down for the night.
- Tire your dog out. If you exercise your dog properly during the day, they will sleep soundlyat night.
- Massage aches away. Older dogs occasionally have pain from arthritis that keeps them up at night. Do whatever you can to relieve the pain, and your buddy will sleep better.
- Give your dog room to be themselves. Some dogs are simply night owls, and no matter what you do they will always stay awake.
- A little light in your dog’s life. Some dogs have trouble sleeping because of night-timeanxiety. Leaving a nightlight can be a reassuring touch.
- Prepare a good dinner. Good hearty homemade food is the best you can do if your dog has sleeping problems. Even just a plain yogurt with few blueberries as a desert can help alleviate a dog’s anxiety and calm their tummy. For balanced vet-formulated homemade recipes, please go to www.equals.dog.

"A few months ago, I started cooking for my dog Tofu. Honestly, I didn't initially consider this when I adopted him from the SPCA in 2020. But one day, while I was preparing my own lunch, Tofu became intrigued by what I was doing and tried to sneak a peek at what was on the kitchen counter. I decided to share some of the food with him, including both veggies and meat, and he loved it! As a result, he's no longer interested in commercial pet food and now prefers real meat. He also enjoys cooking new recipes with me. Typically, I set aside one free day to source all the necessary ingredients and prepare three or four different recipes that will last for about a month. I store the food in the freezer to prevent spoilage. In addition to knowing exactly what's in Tofu's food now, it's also cheaper than buying commercial pet food. In Hong Kong, we have access to a variety of high-quality meats such as venison. Also, fresh local veggies all year round. Tofu's happy tongue is the best reward for my cooking efforts! :-)"

𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫

While dogs are never really underdressed – they wear their favorite fur all year round – winter cold can still give a painful bite.

With a few simple precautions you can keep your dog cosy, no matter what winter throws your way.

- Consider your dog’s background. Not all dogs are equally at home in the cold (or heat). While a Labrador or sheep dog might be comfortable outside on all but the coldest days, a small poodle or short-haired dog might get chilly, even when it’s balmy.

- Only dogs that grow thick coats can really stay outdoors in the cold.

- Keep your dog’s hair combed. If your dog grows a thick hair coat for the winter, you want to make sure that it doesn’t get matted.

- Buy your dog something warm. Dog sweaters are perfectly fine (and look great!).

- Forget foot-warmers. In most cases, booties for dogs are more trouble than they’re worth.

- Do your share of skin care. Even dogs that never set a paw outdoors can get dry, itchy skin because of the cold winter air. Try giving your dog multivitamins that contain vitamin B complex with fatty acids. EQUALS multivitamins are in a powder form that can easily be mixed with your dog’s food (www.equals.dog).

- Pay attention to your dog’s appetite. If they live outdoors, they will burn a lot more calories in the winter just to keep warm. You may need to increase your dog’s calorie intake by 25-50%.

- Maintain a fresh and full water bowl. A dog can only go only for 20 hours without water before becoming dehydrated. Provide fresh water frequently throughout the day, to keep the water bowl full.

𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬: 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬

Cataracts often cause problems for people, but in dogs (and cats) they usually aren’t serious enough to raise an eyebrow. After all, a dog’s normal vision isn’t much better than that of the cartoon character, Mr. Magoo. The difference in sight caused by cataracts is usually minimal, however, if your buddy needs help getting around - or if you’re concerned about preventing cataracts in the future - here are some tips.

- Beware! Rearranging furniture at home is not a fun game for your four-legged friend, and a and a little bumpy.

- Give your dog a tour. If you do move things around, or if your dog has just begun having vision problems, gently lead them around the house, so they learn where everything is.

- Keep your dog within reach. Unless the garden or yard is securely fenced, keep them on a leash whenever you go outside.

- Keep up with check-ups. Apart from being a heredity condition, the leading cause of cataracts in dogs is diabetes. (Golden Retrievers, Labradors and Poodles are particularly susceptible). When the condition is caught early, cataracts can be delayed or even prevented altogether.

- Adjust your dog’s diet. Switching to a freshly made food is the best, because you can choose the best ingredients and adjust the fibre content. There’s scientific evidence showing that fibre can help control blood sugar levels and perhaps lower the risk of developing cataracts. EQUALS can provide a tailor-made recipe you can cook for your pooch at home. Natural supplements is another way to help your buddy alleviate the condition or even prevent it to happen.
