Very proud of Dr Whitson volunteering in the AAO’s ongoing campaign to support veterans' eye care in August, providing free screenings during the American Legion's national convention. The Academy and the Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology partnered to perform glaucoma screenings for more than 100 veterans and their family members, identifying one person who may have had a recent stroke, along with numerous glaucoma suspects. Ophthalmologists also found and referred suspected cases of ischemic optic neuropathy, dry macular degeneration, papilledema, and pseudotumor cerebri.

This image illustrates how a person with macular degeneration sees! This condition can be detrimental to central vision impairing the ability to recognize faces and to read. Our mission here at Whitson Vision is not only to treat this condition but to also hopefully prevent it! Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test that utilizes light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina in the back of the eye allowing your doctor to visualize many distinctive layers of the retina. OCT assists in the diagnosis and management of macular degeneration, many other retinal conditions and even glaucoma. The 1st photo hereis a normal OCT image; the 2nd shows an eye with wet macular degeneration, while the last photo has evidence of the dry type of macular degeneration.
At Whitson Vision, we have access to the latest OCT technology which even allows our doctors to see retinal and choroidal vasculature!

The first image is a photograph of a normal eye with a healthy macula which is responsible for our central vision. The following images are of eyes with dry and wet macular degeneration. More than 2 million Americans over the age of 50 suffer from advanced Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), which causes severe vision loss. There are 2 types of ARMD. The 2nd photo shows an eye with a dry type where you can see build up of drusen, which are abnormal collections of extracellular material in the deep layers of the retina. The last photo shows bleeding in the macular region which represents the wet type of this condition. This type of ARMD causes significant damage to central vision, if left untreated, due to development of abnormal blood vessels. Most cases of wet ARMD require injections of medication into the eye. Risk factors include older age, family history, being white and/or female, smoking, being overweight and having heart disease, high blood pressure or cholesterol.

Not all sunglasses protect our eyes equally. In addition to filtering out harmful UV light, polarized lenses reduce glare coming off reflective surfaces like water and pavement. Polarization makes activities like driving and being on the water safer and more enjoyable by providing significantly clearer vision.

The month around the 4th of July is the most dangerous time. Two thirds of the fireworks injuries treated in emergency rooms in 2017 occurred between mid-June and mid-July, according to a US Consumer Safety Commission’s report. Some of the serious fireworks-related eye injuries include chemical and thermal burns, corneal abrasions and retinal detachment. These injuries can cause permanent eye damage and vision loss! Please stay safe and leave the fireworks to the professionals!
