Tomorrow's the first day of our conference and we have a few more speakers to introduce!

Meet Dr. James Tsai, who will be discussing "New Innovative Directions in Opthalmic Telemedicine, AI, & Remote Monitoring."

Dr. Tsai, a clinician-scholar and health care administrator, is an expert in the diagnosis and management of challenging glaucoma cases including complex glaucoma surgery. President of New York Eye & Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE), the first and longest operating specialty hospital in the Western Hemisphere, Tsai is also the inaugural Delafield- Rodgers Professor of Ophthalmology and Health System Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) and Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS). In addition, Tsai also serves as Vice President for Population Health Specialty Services at MSHS and Director of the Center for Ophthalmic Artificial Intelligence and Human Health at ISMMS. Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Tsai served as the inaugural Robert R. Young Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Yale University School of Medicine and Chief of Ophthalmology at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

At NYEE Tsai is responsible for the strategic and sustainable growth of the venerable institution. He has guided the ophthalmology department in pursuing groundbreaking research in ocular imaging, artificial intelligence, and genomics. Furthermore, Tsai has enhanced the capabilities of, and readied for clinical trials, the country’s first ophthalmic robotic assistant, a highly sophisticated device that promises to change the face of micro-interventional ophthalmic surgery. In addition, he has overseen the implementation of an innovative system-wide tele-consult
program for diabetic retinopathy, emergency department ophthalmic conditions, and eye strokes. Under his leadership, NYEE runs one of the largest national residency programs in ophthalmology.

Author of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 85 invited articles, chapters, and textbooks, including the Oxford American Handbook of Ophthalmology and Medical Management of Glaucoma (4 editions), Tsai has served as editorial board member of 9 scientific journals and manuscript reviewer for over 110 additional scientific journals. He is the current President of the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO), Chair of the Section on Ophthalmology of The New York Academy of Medicine, and Trustee-at-Large of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO). He is the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) Life Achievement Honor Award, Fight for Sight’s Physician Scientist Award, Crain’s New York Business’ 2022 Notable Health Care Leaders Award, USC/Doheny Eye Institute’s Distinguished Alumnus Award, and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award (Marquis Who’s Who). At Mount Sinai, Tsai is Co-Chair of the Committee to Address Anti-Asian Bias and Racism (CAABR) and Member of the Task Force to Address Racism. In November 2022 he will begin his 3-year term on the Administrative Board of the Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH) of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC).

A Magna Cum Laude graduate and Trustee Emeritus of Amherst College, Tsai earned his M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine and his M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the LAC-USC Medical Center and Doheny Eye Institute (at the time affiliated with the University of Southern California). Tsai received his glaucoma fellowship training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Health System, and at Moorfields Eye Hospital/Institute of Ophthalmology in London. He is also the recipient of a M.A. (Hon) from Yale University.
