November 20, The Transgender Day of Remembrance, is meant to honor the lives lost in acts of anti-transgender violence and to raise public awareness of the continued violence that transgender and gender nonconforming individuals face.

Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Although transgender people continue to face oppression and violence, they are resilient, strong, and loving. At Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida, we are proud to stand with them. We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all our patients, staff and supporters regardless of their gender identity or expression.

"To say I'm in disbelief is an understatement. Yesterday’s results made one thing clear: Floridians want reproductive freedom. While Amendment 4 received 57%—a clear majority—it fell just short of the threshold to pass. Every tactic to confuse and mislead voters worked, underscoring the urgent need for change.

Since 2022, we’ve seen the heartbreaking impact of abortion bans on patients, with women forced out of state for care, and some nearly dying due to lack of access to emergency services.

While we grieve this setback, we remain committed. We’ll hold our our public officials accountable to the will of the people and continue fighting to restore reproductive freedom for all Floridians. Let’s keep pushing forward."
