Congratulations to three senior students who received the HOPP Career Awards last night at ETCH. The three winners are: Anna Martin, Noah Russell, and Jacob Clark. Anna Martin presented her plans for an education at Belmont College with the hopes of becoming a pediatric oncology nurse. Noah Russell entertained the group by playing the guitar and said he will be attending Northeast State Community College and hopes to pursue a career in bluegrass music. The third award winner was unable to attend, but Dr. Shahid Malik stated that Jacob Clark is planning a career in graphic design. Each recipient receives a $500 award. Congratulations!

Good morning, everyone! I have a question, an answer, and an invitation:

The question: Are you aware of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation?

The answer: St. Baldrick’s provides funds to pay for research into cures for childhood cancers, and only childhood cancers. The foundation raises these funds through community head-shaving events that are held not only nationwide but in other countries as well.

The invitation: We can help! H.O.P.P. (Hematology/Oncology Patients and Parents) has a goal of hosting a St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event in Knoxville next year; we’ll be looking among our staff for helpers. In the meantime, the closest event takes place at LMU; this year it is set for Friday, April 12.

Chaplain Marty Koontz was a first-time shavee last year at LMU and will repeat the fun this year.

Thanks so much for making the holiday season bright for so many of our patients and patient families. More Information on our Rafting adventure at Adventures Unlimited!

It takes approximately an hour and a half from hospital to get to Adventures Unlimited. Take I-75 South, exit 25 to State Road 60 South, then to 64 East to Ocoee. (Plug in address on maps/gps for detailed directions)

WHEN/WHAT TIME: August 26th, 2018. Arrive at Adventures Unlimited by 1 pm.
Adventures Unlimited Bus leaves for the river promptly at 1:30 pm for rafting trip. Rafting trip is free for Hem/Onc staff, patients 12 years of age and up, and immediate family.

WHAT TO BRING:
For rafting each person is required to wear shirt, shoes and shorts. They have a bath house to change in before and after. Remember to bring a change of clothes, towel, and sunscreen. Do not bring anything of value. They have lockers to rent or you can leave items in car. They will hold car keys at desk during trip.

FOOD:
Please eat before you come, trip takes approximately 2 hours. A meal will be provided after, compliments of Adventures Unlimited.

TRANSPORTATION: You must make your own travel arrangements to reach Adventures Unlimited.

Waivers: Each individual in group must sign an East Tennessee Children’s Hospital waiver to raft with our group. Copies are available in clinic.

Marty promised us a picture of the post-St. Baldrick’s Bald - Marty Koontz…..so here it is!

She reports, "It was a fun time on the LMU campus; several of our own clinic patients were there with their parents. In the interests of honesty, I have to tell you that getting my head shaved was not such a big deal since I often get it cut very short anyway, plus I really don’t like having to fuss with my hair no matter what length it is!"

Marty has been touched by the warm thanks that she received from parents of clinic patients. She wants to thank each of you who donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for continued research into childhood cancer treatments. "You were all a part of raising $1,500.00 to see me bald, and part of the total of $9,000.00 raised by all who participated in this LMU event. We’ll do this again next year! Thank you ALL so much!"

The Butterfly Fund supports research, treatment and services dedicated to the defeat of childhood cancers. All proceeds go to The Butterfly Fund help continue to efforts of diminishing childhood cancer.
