Brynn Cicippio, LMFT & Associates

Brynn Cicippio, LMFT & Associates www.bcatherapy.com I work closely with clients who want to be true to themselves without any hesitation, guilt, or shame.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in substance use, I understand how addiction influences the members of a family system and plays out over multiple generations. In addition to individuals raised in addicted homes, I also have extensive experience helping those currently struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Together, we can move you toward a life of serenity, understanding, and sobriety where you gain experience confidence, self acceptance, and peace of mind.

A tool that will help you work through anxiety when it's not working for you is to consider multiple outcomes.

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, it's essential to consider various scenarios for the first day. By evaluating the best, worst, and most realistic outcomes. Considering all 3 options slows down our thinking, gets all parts of our brain working together, and helps us gain control over anxiety and not stay stuck.

A tool that will help you work through anxiety when it's not working for you is Progressive Muscle Relaxation!

Using our bodies is an effective way to reduce anxious feelings and get unstuck.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is a structured exercise where you tense then release certain areas of the body, one at a time, starting from the top of your head and moving down. Being mindful of the release and noticing the changes in your body increases your closeness to calmness and relaxation.

PMR increases your mind-body connection, slows down the strong emotional and reactive parts of the brain, and slows down breathing. All of these outcomes are effective and proven in gaining control over anxiety.

Make communication a priority with your partner when you are both calm.

Set your kids up for success.

Dr. Ross Greene reminds us that kids do well when they can. Consider what skills your child may need help with, such as flexibility and communication, and focus on teaching and developing those skills for success.

The main point of the text is to develop affective calmness and use less words when communicating.

Dr. Russell Barkley's advice is clear: "Act, don’t yak." Using fewer words and staying calm and assertive will have more influence than speaking from emotional dysregulation. Develop affective calmness for better outcomes.

Familiar doesn't mean healthy. A lot of things feel familiar... doesn't mean it's healthy and safe for you.

Familiar simply means you have experienced it before. You can probably predict the outcome to a certain degree. You might know when its coming, what its going to look like.

Triggers to drink, manipulative relationships, marital conflict, challenges to your sobriety, unsupportive family. All might be familiar, none are healthy.

Don't let others affect your recovery!

While relationships are an important role in your recovery! Your recovery is YOURS and no one else's. Deciding which relationships are healthy for you is your responsibility alone. Just like you wouldn't credit someone else for the hard work it takes to get sober and on the recovery path, you also can't blame others for relapse.

Recovery for self or to take care of everyone else?

Taking care of yourself first is realizing that you're also important. It is important to not constantly ignore your needs and the things that make you feel good.

Recovery requires a level of vulnerability that addiction has been trying to bury.

Recovery is a total lifestyle change, from ditching unhealthy friendships to healing shame.

Vulnerability permits honesty at the most raw level. It's uncomfortable, it can feel painful, and most importantly, it can be life changing.
