Fun Facts

1. During your lifetime, it’s likely that you’ll walk approximately 115,000 miles. That’s like circling the globe on foot over four times.

2. There are 26 bones in a foot. That’s one-quarter of all the bones found in your body. Each foot also has 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 tendons and muscles.

3. Toenails grow faster in the summer, when pregnant, and for teenagers. Normally it takes 5-6 months to grow a new toenail completely.

4. Your feet contain 250,000 sweat glands which can produce ½ a pint of perspiration each day.

5. By the time a baby reaches the age of one, their feet have grown to almost half their adult size.

5. More sensory nerve endings are found in the soles of your feet per square centimeter than any other part of your body.

6. On average, women walk 3 miles more than men daily. They also have 4 times as many foot problems as men.

So, take good care of your wonderful feet! If you experience any pain or concerning symptoms, get them checked out right away by our podiatrist.

Self-Myofascial Release (SMR) is an effective way to massage out knots and tension in the bottom of the feet from the comfort of your home or office.

Sit in a chair and place a tennis ball on the floor in front of you.

Begin by placing the arch of your foot on the ball. Apply some pressure to feel the ball releasing tightness in the fascia.

Then, slowly begin to roll your foot over the ball. Roll up toward your toes slowly, pausing whenever you find a tight spot and holding for 30 seconds. Then, slowly roll back down towards your heel, pausing whenever you find a tight spot and holding for 30 seconds.

After you’ve completed one foot, switch sides.

This exercise strengthens the calves and ankles to provide strength and relief to the feet.

Step up onto a block with both feet. Place one hand on a wall for more stability.

Lower your right heel down towards the ground to feel a stretch through your foot and calf.

Then, press up through the ball of your right foot and flex your calf muscle at the top. Repeat for 10 reps, then switch feet.
