This year’s Asia-Pacific Leukemia Consortium (APLC) was held in Chiang Mai on November 1. Dr Yvonne was privileged to be part of the AML panel, along with Prof Mark Levis from John Hopkins and colleagues from Taiwan, Malaysia, and China.

The consortium focused on advancing leukemia research, sharing best practices and latest treatments and innovations in leukemia care within the Asia-Pacific region.

In conjunction with Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Curie Oncology held a symposium on lung cancer on November 2, in partnership with Farrer Park Hospital. We are honoured to have Dr Toh Chee Keong, medical oncologist, and Dr Lim Hui Fang, respiratory physician as speakers, with Lianhe Zaobao Senior Health Correspondent Columnist Mr Carl Lim to moderate the session.

During the session, Dr Toh and Dr Lim shared on the signs and symptoms of lung cancer, the screening options as well as the treatment advancements available. Early detection strategies, personalised medicine therapies and targeted treatments were also discussed.

The symposium concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where attendees had the opportunity to interact with the specialists.

The inaugural Best of ASCO Vietnam 2024 conference, hosted by K National Cancer Hospital, was held in Hanoi on November 1. This conference serves as a platform to share the latest findings and breakthroughs from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting 2024 with Vietnam’s medical community.

Dr Choo was privileged to be invited as speaker, presenting data from the DYNAMIC trial on the role of circulating tumour DNA analysis in guiding adjuvant therapy for stage 2 colon cancer.

The conference was well attended with over 600 oncologists from Vietnam and international oncology experts, making it a valuable event for knowledge exchange and advancing cancer care practices in the region. Grateful to Dr Pham Thuan Anh from K Hospital for the invitation and congratulations to the Vietnamese team for a successful meeting.

Dr Yvonne was glad to be invited as speaker for the Prevymis new indications launch symposium held on October 22, sharing the platform with old friends and colleagues from SGH, NUH and MEH, including Dr Asok Kurup, Prof Koh Liang Piu, and Dr Lionel Lum Hon Wai.

During the session, Dr Yvonne focused on CMV infections in transplant patients, sharing valuable insights from her experience. The symposium concluded with a panel discussion, where the specialists in attendance shared their expert opinions and insights on the topic.

An extra bonus of this meeting was reconnecting with the son of a patient Dr Yvonne had transplanted 16 years ago, who is now a pharmacist!

Nurse Aisah had an engaging afternoon on September 28, sharing her nursing expertise on effective strategies for managing skin toxicity related to Erbitux. She was privileged to share the stage with esteemed colleagues including Dr Evelyn Wong from NCCS, RN Catherine Trevaskis from Canberra Hospital, APN Carol Ho from NCIS, and ANC Madalinah Tan from CGH. Together, they delved into understanding the adverse events associated with targeted therapies used in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) treatment and explored approaches to managing mCRC treatment, particularly in patients with a colostomy.

The session offered valuable practical knowledge and tools to the oncology nurses in attendance, which will help to enhance patient’s quality of care and improve treatment outcomes.

The 35th Annual Scientific Congress of the Malaysian Oncological Society (ASCOMOS) took place in Penang on October 11-13.

On Day 2 of the event, Dr John Chia presented landmark trials and biomarker-directed therapies in endometrial cancer and participated in a multidisciplinary case discussion alongside Dr Jennifer Leong and Dr Chew Ghee Kheng, fostering valuable exchanges among specialists.

Dr Choo’s session, chaired by Dr Cheah Soon Keat, focused on emerging strategies for managing KRAS mutations in metastatic colorectal cancer, highlighting recent developments in the field.

It was a wonderful and insightful 3-day event where our doctors got to reconnect with familiar faces and establish new connections with the oncology community. Also kudos to Dr Ang Soo Fan for organisng such a great and successful event. Malaysia boleh!

Dr Toh had the privilege of speaking at the event, where he presented a real-world case study on KRAS G12C non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment. He also took part in a panel discussion alongside Dr Ang Mei Kim, Dr Jeffrey Clarke, Dr Aaron Tan, and Dr Huang Yiqing.
