🎓 Exciting News! I’ve just completed the PDA/Persistent Drive for Autonomy (also known as Pathological Demand Avoidance)course with PDA North America Certificate Program. As a speech therapist deeply committed to neurodiversity, this training is a significant milestone for me.

This course has equipped me with enhanced understanding and strategies to better serve those who thrive on autonomy, including many autistic children. Understanding the unique needs and perspectives of each individual is at the heart of my practice, and this course has been a valuable addition to that journey.

I’m thrilled to integrate this new knowledge into my services, furthering my commitment to provide quality, inclusive, and affirming care. Here’s to continued learning and growing in our journey to support neurodiversity! 🌟

Another reason to love Daniel Tiger! The Daniel and Max Play Together book is a great tool to talk about autism with all children. It is also a great way to spark a conversation about autism with an autistic child. There’s something very special about being reflected with a beloved character. Also, many autistic individuals are visual thinkers so, a book with pictures is very beneficial.

Many autistic individuals are gestalt langauge processors. This means that they may develop language differently than most people (analytic language processors). Understanding how autistic individuals may develop langauge helps us support their langauge efficiently.

I had a parent ask me if it was “worth doing speech therapy because my daughter is 9 years old?”, my answer was, “YES”. It is never too late to gain new skills, as long as you are meeting the child where they are. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. 😉

Research indicates that the earlier a child starts intervention the greater the outcome. This is why the “wait and see” approach is not preferable.

Common signs of CAPD include difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, difficulty distinguishing sounds that are similar, may appear to hear part of the sentence rather than the whole sentence, may not provide a correct answer to a question but answer will be somewhat related.

Visual thinkers may benefit from the use of visuals during daily tasks. Visuals may include books, social stories, photographs, pictures and picture boards. This may provide greater opportunities to understand the information given and may also be used as a mode of communication.

Parents who disclose their child’s autism diagnosis may be looking for support, whether it’s to be understood or need assistance. Next time a caregiver discloses an autism diagnosis listen to them and ask how you can support them. It takes a village and you can always be part of someone’s village, even if it’s for a day.

The words we use to describe our children can be very powerful. Using strength based language humanizes autism and demonstrates acceptance for who they are.

There are different ways to socialize. Many autistic individuals rather skip the small talk and go straight to the main subject or what interests them. To some people it can come across as rude but it’s not, it’s a communication preference. Understanding these communication preferences allows us to respect these differences and engage in genuine conversations without having one person feel offended.
