๐ŸŽ“ Exciting News! Iโ€™ve just completed the PDA/Persistent Drive for Autonomy (also known as Pathological Demand Avoidance)course with PDA North America Certificate Program. As a speech therapist deeply committed to neurodiversity, this training is a significant milestone for me.

This course has equipped me with enhanced understanding and strategies to better serve those who thrive on autonomy, including many autistic children. Understanding the unique needs and perspectives of each individual is at the heart of my practice, and this course has been a valuable addition to that journey.

Iโ€™m thrilled to integrate this new knowledge into my services, furthering my commitment to provide quality, inclusive, and affirming care. Hereโ€™s to continued learning and growing in our journey to support neurodiversity! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐ŸŒˆ Hello Wonderful Families of Austin Speech Therapy! ๐ŸŒŸ

As we step into a new and exciting year, I want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to each one of you. Your trust in us to be a part of your familyโ€™s journey is a gift we cherish every day. ๐Ÿ™

Here at Austin Speech Therapy, our hearts are set on more than just words. We're passionate about nurturing connections, building meaningful language, and celebrating every child's unique individuality. ๐ŸŒฑ

Isn't it amazing how language can open doors to new worlds? Itโ€™s not just about forming sentences; it's about forming friendships, sharing stories, and understanding each other. It's about those little moments when a child expresses their thoughts or joins in a game and feels the joy of being understood and included. ๐Ÿค—

We believe every child has their own incredible way of seeing the world, and our goal is to support their unique way of communicating it. Whether it's through words, gestures, or a mix of both, every form of expression is a step toward stronger social connections. ๐ŸŒ

This year, we're excited to continue fostering these social bonds, helping our kids not only grow in language but in confidence and joy. Every session is a step towards more laughter, understanding, and meaningful interactions. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

If you're wondering how speech therapy can support your child's social and communicative journey, let's talk! We're always here to answer your questions, share insights, and guide you on this path of discovery and growth. ๐Ÿ“ž

Together, letโ€™s make this year a celebration of every child's unique voice and the beautiful connections that language can create. Hereโ€™s to a year of growth, connection, and joy at Austin Speech Therapy! โœจ

Stimming is self-regulation. It is important to regulate our sensory system to feel comfortable and to experience the world around us. Thank you Goally!

A "non-exhaustive" list, we said... ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฏ

But really. Stimming isn't that complicated- it's just a fancy word for "self-regulating." It looks different for everyone, and that's something to celebrate.

Which types of stimming sounds familiar?

Another reason to love Daniel Tiger! The Daniel and Max Play Together book is a great tool to talk about autism with all children. It is also a great way to spark a conversation about autism with an autistic child. Thereโ€™s something very special about being reflected with a beloved character. Also, many autistic individuals are visual thinkers so, a book with pictures is very beneficial.

Many autistic individuals are gestalt langauge processors. This means that they may develop language differently than most people (analytic language processors). Understanding how autistic individuals may develop langauge helps us support their langauge efficiently.

I had a parent ask me if it was โ€œworth doing speech therapy because my daughter is 9 years old?โ€, my answer was, โ€œYESโ€. It is never too late to gain new skills, as long as you are meeting the child where they are. Donโ€™t let anyone tell you otherwise. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Common signs of CAPD include difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, difficulty distinguishing sounds that are similar, may appear to hear part of the sentence rather than the whole sentence, may not provide a correct answer to a question but answer will be somewhat related.

Parents who disclose their childโ€™s autism diagnosis may be looking for support, whether itโ€™s to be understood or need assistance. Next time a caregiver discloses an autism diagnosis listen to them and ask how you can support them. It takes a village and you can always be part of someoneโ€™s village, even if itโ€™s for a day.

There are different ways to socialize. Many autistic individuals rather skip the small talk and go straight to the main subject or what interests them. To some people it can come across as rude but itโ€™s not, itโ€™s a communication preference. Understanding these communication preferences allows us to respect these differences and engage in genuine conversations without having one person feel offended. Thank you Life in an Autism World for the visual!
