Austin Area Birthing Center, Inc.

Austin Area Birthing Center, Inc. Since 1987 AABC has provided families with three safe, homelike birthing centers for natural childbirth, including waterbirths. www.austinabc.com

Austin ABC is the only accredited birthing center in Central Texas. With three beautiful locations, AABC provides our moms and their families with a comfortable, private, home-like environment designed from the ground up by architects and interior designers working closely with our team of midwives. Each of our six birthing suites (three in each location) has a large birthing tub as well as private, high-end bathroom facilities, ensuring that our clients donโ€™t share these amenities with other families. Austin ABC's William Cannon location also has a kitchenette in each birthing suite while our Duval Rd. location has a shared kitchen in the birthing wing. Our services cost much less than hospital deliveries and we are in-network with most major health insurance providers.

A Fetal Non-Stress Test (NST) is a procedure to assess the baby's well-being by monitoring the fetal heart rate, uterine contractions, and baby's movements. For mothers over 35, we recommend weekly NSTs starting at 36 weeks, and if the due date passes by more than a week, typically at 41 weeks. At 41 weeks, we alternate between NST and ultrasound to ensure the baby's health.

An episiotomy is a surgical cut made in the perineal area during birth. The purpose is to expand the area of the vaginal opening so that a baby can easily pass through it without causing further damage in the region.

The idea behind episiotomy is to give a controlled incision in the perineum to prevent larger tears that may occur during natural birth. However, it is not always necessary. To learn more about episiotomy, check out our recent blog!

We offer comprehensive prenatal care similar in schedule to a standard OB-GYN, with regular checkups tailored to your pregnancy's progress. Visits begin monthly, then become more frequent as you get closer to delivery. However, the nature of the appointments is unique with a midwife. Our in-depth first appointment allows for a full hour of personalized discussion and examination with your midwife, and subsequent visits are efficient at 30 minutes, utilizing educational checklists to ensure you're informed and empowered throughout your pregnancy journey.

You may already know that birth centers are a suitable and safe option for low-risk natural births. But if youโ€™re a mother who has had their first baby via a C-section, youโ€™re probably wondering if you can ever give birth at the birth center.

Good news, a natural birth after a C-section is possible as long as certain criteria are met. This is known as a VBAC, vaginal birth after cesarean. To learn more about VBAC, check out our recent blog!

VBAC is when you have a vaginal birth after cesarean. To learn more about VBACs at Austin Area Birthing Center, check out our blog.

VBAC stands for vaginal birth after Cesarean section, and it's a popular choice among mothers seeking a different birthing experience. At Austin Area Birthing Center, we prioritize offering everyone the opportunity to have the birth they desire, regardless of past experiences. While factors like failure to progress or fetal distress may have led to a previous C-section, they don't necessarily determine future birthing options. We carefully consider various factors, including baby weight, when discussing recommendations for a VBAC. For women who have had two or more Cesarean sections, hospital births and subsequent Cesarean sections are typically recommended.

During your birth classes or pregnancy research, you have likely already learned how the baby is connected to the placenta via the umbilical cord. This cord provides the passage for nutrients and oxygen from the mother to the baby and carries waste away from the baby.

As you deliver your baby, the cord is still attached and needs to be clamped and cut accordingly. Midwives generally prefer a pathway of delayed cord clamping for numerous reasons. To learn more about delayed cord clamping, check out our recent blog!
