Nobody wants to avoid fun social events just to avoid alcohol. Here are some tips for staying sober on Labor Day—and still enjoying yourself.

1. Be Open About Not Drinking
It can be difficult to tell other people about your decision to quit or cut back, but it is important to communicate your needs. You may want to avoid having to discuss your sobriety, and while this may feel like the best solution, it is important to at least tell the host and a few others you trust that you would like to have a sober Labor day. People can be more supportive than you might expect.

2. Find a Sober Friend or Ally
Labor Day is commonly a day for socializing and quality time with loved ones. Having a few close and reliable friends who are also sober, or who will help you stay sober, can make a world of difference. You might consider asking someone to be your accountability partner—or simply find a handful of others who also want to cut down on drinking to hang out with during the event.

3. Choose Events with Less Pressure to Drink
Think about the context and the people involved in your Labor Day plans. If your event is alcohol-based or in a place that might make you want to drink, it might be harder to resist temptation. If the people attending are heavy drinkers or people who might pressure you to consume alcohol, it will be more difficult to stay in control. If you have more than one option for how to spend the holiday, look for social groups and situations where you think it will be easier to resist your urges and find support. There may even be sober Labor Day events happening near you.

4. Bring Your Own Beverages
If you would like to enjoy the barbecue without being incessantly offered alcoholic drinks, bring some nonalcoholic beverages to share. There are lots of fun non-alcoholic options to create Having a drink already can assist you in fitting in—and your host will probably be thankful for the extra refreshments!

5. Create Your Own Event
If you don’t see any appealing alcohol-free plans for Labor Day, consider throwing your own party! Invite people to grill, gather in the park, or go to the beach. Choose sober people or those who don’t want to drink excessively, and make it clear to guests that you’d prefer an alcohol-free gathering. You could even create a mocktail bar and mix up some inventive late-summer drinks.

6. Be OK With Prioritizing Your Well-Being
Though it can be disappointing to miss out on the fun, your well-being should always be a priority. This is especially true if you are recovering from alcohol use disorder. With more recovery time behind you, it can make you able to face the recovery in front of you. Until then, don't be too hard on yourself if you need to leave. Putting yourself first is always a good thing when it comes to staying sober! Happy Labor Day!

When you think about what you have in your life and your first instinct is to give to others, you have everything you need. ❤️

Sadio Mane, a Senegalese soccer star, earns approximately $10.2 million annually. He gave the world a rude awakening after some fans were flabbergasted when they saw him carrying a cracked iPhone 11. His response was awesome:
"Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches, and two jet planes? I starved, I worked in the fields, played barefoot, and I didn't go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. I have built schools and a stadium, provide clothes, shoes, and food for people in extreme poverty. In addition, I give 70 euros per month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips, and even planes. I prefer that my people receive some of what life has given me."

August was a big month for Change Happens and all of our programs! The 22nd annual Children's Health Day was expanded this year to include events at Generation One and Thompson Elementary, both in Third Ward. This was in addition to the drive-thru backpack giveaway and the huge health fair at Almeda Mall with entertainment and over 40 vendors. During August, STAIRS 2.0 spoke to nearly 500 individuals and families about housing, mental health and substance use. Thank you ACA Navigators!
