Yes, CAR-T cells destroy cancer cells and help save lives! 💪

For decades, the foundations of cancer treatment have been surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and more recently, immunotherapy.

Immunotherapy refers to therapies that enlist and strengthen the power of a patient's immune system to attack tumors and CAR T-cell therapy is an example of immunotherapy.

*CAR stands for chimeric antigen receptor and the T cell is a type of white blood cell that is a part of your immune system.

CAR (chimeric antigen receptor)T-cell therapy uses the patient’s own immune cells to fight their cancer. Immune cells are isolated from blood, trained in a laboratory to be able to recognise cancerous cells and reinfused into the patient as a ‘living drug’, where they can seek and destroy cancer.

Scientists say that, without the treatment, Alyssa's next option would have been palliative care.

In this interview with Radio’s 96.3 Hao FM #健康娜件事, Dr Lim ZiYi, Senior Consultant in Haematology at the Centre for Clinical Haematology discussed blood cancer and the various treatment options available for patients.

Dr Lim expressed optimism in the progression of blood cancer treatment options, highlighting an innovative form of cell and gene therapy, which genetically modifies a patient’s T-cells (a form of white blood cells) to fight cancer cells. With medical advancements, he shares that patients diagnosed with the disease today have a higher chance of entering remission or managing the disease for the long-term.
