It’s taken me a little bit of time to find the sweet spot that smoothly blends Layla the naturopath and now Layla the mumma together.
But we are doing it!
with a splash of baby chaos, a slurp of naturopathic professionalism and a strong shot of coffee for good measure…
It all seems to be working just perfectly 🌿✨👌🏾.

I have been back on the tools for 4 months, reconnecting with pre-existing patients and now open up the books for new patients to join the party.

I have also been diving deep into infant herbal and nutritional medicine, with a new found passion for supporting little bubs and post natal mummas.

My new favourite thing is a herbal blend for them poor little teething banshees. 🦷☹️😬

Endo programs are back in action, endo meet ups TBA and coming soon - Northern Rivers Women in Wellness events.

I have a beautiful old friend who is a host and super talented and forever curious interviewer on - an awesome podcast discussing the depths of pregnancy, birth and beyond from a wide range of different perspectives.

I recently listened to an interview with Steven Kennedy, a father and founder of ‘birthing dads’ about his birth and post partum experience and the anxiety’s and challenges faced by men and the primary support that we forget about.
A must listen for those expecting or planning.

I was also lucky enough to be invited to chat with Oni talking Endometriosis and pregnancy. You can listen over at 👂👍🏽

Whaddup 3rd trimester.

Despite the starfish/ dead-to-the-world pic, we’ve landed in 3rd trimester and feeling fly and so bloody fabulous with the universe growing inside.

I wanted to share the weird and wonderful things that were NOT expected in pregnancy thus far, that your friends forget to tell you about and you only find out once you google. The less common than ‘morning sickness’ types of symptoms with a naturopathic twist.

Fluid retention ~ I dodged morning sickness, burger cravings and crazy moods but with 2nd trimester got slammed with hardcore fluid retention issues. Super common in pregnancy. We all get a bit puffy.
Less common is what I’ve got going on which is a combo of lipodema/ lymphedema. (Think the Michelin Mans wife 👍🏽) At this stage I’m managing with diet, exercise, specialist massages with laser treatments, acupuncture and sexy compression leggings with matching arm tights. Fingers crossed it all settles when the pudding is baked.

IRON!!~ Get your iron tested!! If you’re low in 2nd trimester you are going to struggle to get it up (so to speak). Your iron requirements continue to grow substantially through pregnancy and you do not want to go into 3rd trimester, labour and then post partUm with low iron. Work with a naturopath to find the best supplement dosage and if you need I’m a total advocate for an iron infusion. It’s a game changer.

Eczema ~ I developed eczema all over my tummy, eyes and breasts which google says is normal due to the immune changes the body goes through with the developing foetus. My poor bo***es are copping a scratching beating from midnight flare ups. I’m keeping it at bay with topical creams, more healthy fats and extra supplements to support healing and repair.
Despite these little niggles. I’m loving every minute.❤️

I find it hard to naturopathically support myself and not over analyse every breath.
I am working with my fabulous naturopath and super mum Tabitha from - Amazing accupuncturist Caitlin! from and magic Megan from .
I Would love to learn more about others experiences of not so known pregnancy symptoms that I can add to the ‘how to be pregnant bible' x

I was recently invited share my personal journey with endometriosis and in particular my experience of chronic pain, both physically and mentally.

I work closely with women with Endo who’s story’s are so much more challenging than mine and in this interview we discuss many of the different shades of what this can look like and how it personally affected me. Anxiety, depression, infertility, pregnancy and the impact endometriosis can have on intimacy. A raw and honest conversation about some of the more ugly bits.

Thank you to my friend Jin, New Zealand based Osteo, psychosomatic pain therapist and host of the podcast for having me.
It was a pleasure to join you. 🙏🏽❤️

Repost from Jin.
Episode #15 - My Endometriosis Journey.

My guest today is a Naturopath dedicated to helping women with endometriosis.

This is her pain story, which thankfully didn’t go on for the typical 7 years before getting diagnosed.

At times, her life was put on hold because of her dodgy period and symptoms.

Periods so heavy that super tampons and a pad weren’t enough, often waking up to something that resembled a murder scene.

Layla found herself on morphine based drugs, experiencing anxiety and depression, being told she was a hypochondriac and that she’d be infertile.

A host of therapies, therapists, surgery and a $20k loan she burnt through in 1 year in search for a solution, she is now symptom free… and pregnant!!

Listen in if you have endo or know someone with it.

Go follow Layla and send her and her baby some 💜

Lots of resources in the podcast notes.

A call out to all Endo sisters!!! I’ve been working on a new project that offers a formalised management and support program for women with endometriosis.

To get this bad boy off the ground, I need to chat to women with Endo to make sure what im offering, fits the criteria of every Endo woman.

Endo has no cure. No 2 presentations are the same. It’s not just a gynaecological condition of heavy and painful periods, it can cause chronic pain all over at any time of the month, anxiety, depression, exhaustion, poor immune function, IBS, disordered eating and affect employment, relationships, quality of life and increase the chances of infertility.
As you can imagine, there is no pill that can cover all of this.

Managing Endo can require a s**t tonne of commitment and ongoing care from a variety of different places and a team of skilled practitioners.
This is not cheap.

I took out a 20G loan and spent it in 1 year just to manage my Endo. During this time, I worked and had an income, I had my rent paid for and private health care helped cover a portion of my surgery.
I knew more than the average Endo woman and I still spent so much money and time as I fumbled my way through.

What I have created is a program to guide and coach women with Endo as they navigate their way through, knowing they feel completely supported as they go.
I’ve worked SO Hard to manage my Endo to a place I consider to be ‘symptom free’ and I strive so hard to support those Endo women I work with get to a similar place.

There is no one size fits all treatment. But there are definite food, lifestyle and supplement prescriptions that are beneficial universally. This info has been collected, tested, turned into a program and ready to be shared.

If you have Endo I would LOVE to chat to you and get your advice on how a program to help manage YOUR Endo would work best for YOU.

Pretty please DM me if you’d like to be involved. Please pass my details on to other ladies with Endo who may be able to get on board. hello@laylametcalfe.com.

The information you share will go towards creating a niche program to help other women with Endo!

I really look forward to working with you!

ENDO FOOD
There is no one size fits all. Each endo case is different. And so no diet suits all endo women.
Here is a list of the food Do’s and Dont’s that are endo aligned across the board. The aim is to then fine tune this to the individual, based on your own personal symptoms, food habits, sensitivities and ethical alignments.
1. REDUCE INFLAMMATION no brainers.
X DAIRY
X GLUTEN
X SUGAR
X Caffeine - sorry
X Booze - sorry again.

2. PLANT BASED (primarily) - lotsa Veggies - (dark leafy green are best - broccoli, kale, spinach, lettuces, cabbage, sprouts) Y? - Nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory, alkalising, high fibre, supports oestrogen metabolism - Preferably warm/cooked- less contracting/ constricting on the digestive system.
3. X GRAINS - can be pro inflammatory - Yes to nuts, seeds, beans, peas, (lentils, chickpeas if they don’t make you too farty and painful.)
4. Lots of healthy EFA’s - avo’s, olive oil, ghee, oily fish, nuts, seeds.
5. Stay hydrated. Water, herbal tea and lots of it.

NEXT.
To investigate.. Are you sensitive to histamines or oxalates? Trial removing these from your diet, 1 month at a time. See how you respond.
Bon appétit 🧑🏽‍🍳
**This is a Layla hack on the basic Endo food info available. Info is based on clinical experience, personal experience and the prescription of endo specialists. ~ For some, cutting out foods that aggravate Endo is easy as the benefits far outweigh the cost. For others, switching up food is really challenging. Hot tip. Go slow. One at a time. Nail it. Move onto the next. Best advice is to do it with the support of a practitioner to identify what is most important.
God speed 🙏🏽
