This is an easy way to reflect on what your nervous system is currently experiencing

I've been using a new illustration to demonstrate nervous system states. It's been going over really well with everyone I've shared it with, so I made a digital copy for you all.

Previous illustrations failed to show the low energy / low stress state. This state is often pathologized due to the fact that we aren't productive when we are low energy. This state is not actually a sign of illness or trauma, our society is just obsessed with productivity and tends to think needing to rest is a problem.

Being low energy sometimes is just part of being human. For those of us with chronic illnesses or long-term trauma responses, this low energy / low stress state is usually the most accessible version of the safe and social state.

It’s Okay to Outgrow the Life You Thought You Wanted 09/09/2021

It’s Okay to Outgrow the Life You Thought You Wanted

“Maybe we can look at ourselves-as-is, rather than the ones we envisioned becoming. That’s the place everything else grows from, anyway.”

It’s Okay to Outgrow the Life You Thought You Wanted How do we untether ourselves from the people we imagined we’d become?

You don’t have to be everything to everyone every time

How about we stop hogging the ball and give God a turn? Just saying - it makes everything better. ❤️

We are hurt in relationships AND we heal in relationships. We are not meant to do life alone, we need each other and thrive in safe, loving relationships.

Therapy is helpful, for sure, but it’s not what heals.
Therapy helps us get to relationships which heal.

Vagal Tone: A Measurable Indicator of Nervous System Health — Trauma Geek

We NEED safe, connected community or horses, horses help too!

"Our vagus nerve needs the safe/calm influence of human and/or animal nervous systems to change tone...Vagal tone is not fixed. It can change over time. There is no quick way to change vagal tone, but with consistent practice, healing this developmental trauma is possible."

Vagal Tone: A Measurable Indicator of Nervous System Health — Trauma Geek Vagal tone is the ability of the ventral vagus nerve to regulate the heart beat. “Cardiac vagal tone" is measured by tracking heart-rate and breathing rate at the same time. The heart-rate speeds up a little when we breathe in, and slows down a little when we breathe out. The bigger the differe

What are your happiness triggers?!

Allow yourself to feel all the feels! None of them are good or bad, right or wrong...they just are.

I grew up believing that crying, swearing, and anger were unacceptable ways to express pain.

It’s been so freeing to reframe them all as purposeful parts of the human experience instead of character flaws to avoid.

I don't know who needs to hear this (of course I do, ALL of us), but doing the bare minimum and letting your body rest and heal is not slacking off. It's self-care.

A fantastic explanation of our body's natural response to trauma, our normal human need for connection and how to heal.

Late-Stage Pandemic Is Messing With Your Brain 03/10/2021

Late-Stage Pandemic Is Messing With Your Brain

“We’re all walking around with some mild cognitive impairment,”...“Based on everything we know about the brain, two of the things that are really good for it are physical activity and novelty. A thing that’s very bad for it is chronic and perpetual stress.”

Late-Stage Pandemic Is Messing With Your Brain We have been doing this so long, we’re forgetting how to be normal.

May we all be as brave as this squirrel, trusting ourselves to take a risk go after what we want!

Sometimes what we think is the issue isn't really the issue at all, its a deflection.
Deflection is a coping skill designed to protect our tender, vulnerable spaces yet those are the spaces that need to be brought into the light so healing can begin.
