When we learn to appreciate what we have, versus always thirsting for more, we may find ourselves satisfied more easily. 🌸 Practicing gratitude can lead to a more positive outlook. ☀️
Especially during times of hardship or adversity, this positivity can help us to survive. When we see the worth in the world around us, we become open to giving and receiving love. Care for ourselves and others is how humanity continues. 💞

We are sad to hear of the recent passing of Dr. Maurice Barry Sterman, PhD.
💙
Often called “The grandfather of neurofeedback”, Dr. Sterman spent nearly 50 years as a psychologist and neurophysiological researcher. He earned his Ph.D in Psychology and Neuroscience from the University of California Los Angeles in 1963. His contributions to the field of Biofeedback allow us to continue to engage in Neurofeedback as a clinical practice today!
🧠
Dr. Sterman’s accolades include, but are not limited to, discovering SensoriMotor Rhythm (a type of brain wave) and over 140 peer-reviewed articles.
😺
Showing how the brain can be changed through EEG conditioning, Dr. Sterman understood how this practice could play a vital role in improving the lives of those experiencing adverse psychological and neurological conditions.

Thank you for all your hard work and dedication Dr. Barry Sterman. We hope to continue your legacy.

You will be greatly missed.

Over 75 percent of all suicides in Canada are males of all ages, from the age of 10 years old.
It's time that we acknowledge the need for a cultural shift in how we express our humanity, identify gender-based approaches in mental health and wellness, and encourage and support the range of emotions needed for healthy growth and development.

Men, it's okay to:

-Cry
-Have a mental illness
-Be sensitive
-Ask for help
-Show your emotions
-Go to therapy
-Talk about your feelings
-Not be the best

Some say the opposite of love is hate, but truly the opposite of love is indifference. When we feel hatred, we invest our time and our energy. However, this investment does not yield a positive return, it only distracts us from the important things in our lives and the love that's all around us.
“Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.”

When you’re full of winter cheer, spread it along to a loved one. 🥰
Sending a supportive text can go a long way! ☃

Consider these as options for your next message:

For those celebrating without their family -
“I’m thinking about you during this difficult time. I’m here for you.”

For those overwhelmed with stress -
“Whenever you need a break, let me know. I’ll bring dinner over.”

For those spending time in difficult situations -
“I’m proud of you. Want to talk tonight at 8?”

For those who you didn’t manage to meet up with -
“I know we’re far from each other right now, but we won’t be forever. I'm thinking of you.

As the holidays approach, so do difficult conversations. ☃️💁‍♀️
If you are hoping to normalize mental health talks with your family, here are some tips to help you broach the topic.

1. Share Your Own Experience
When people hear about therapy through role models or word of mouth, they are more likely to access it themselves.
This doesn’t mean you need to go into detail about what you addressed in therapy, however you may find it helpful to talk about what was helpful and what was challenging about your sessions. Honesty can go a long way!

2. Bring It Up A Few Times (in small amounts)
A subtle mention of therapy may break the ice and lead to larger conversations in the future. Avoid forcing a long talk, pushing others to talk about their experiences, or pushing others to attend, as this can lead to reservations, fear, and arguments.
Easing therapy into the conversation may allow you to have more meaningful 1-to-1 conversations with family members who want to learn more.

3. Use A Physical Health Analogy
We all know someone who “doesn’t believe” in mental health care. For these individuals, it may be helpful to talk about mental health in a similar way to how we talk about physical help.
For example, “I can’t treat a broken arm by myself, so in that case I’ll go to the doctor. In a similar way, sometimes we need extra support for our mental health.”

Remember that even if you face push back from some family members, others may be silently listening. Being honest about mental health support can help others to be brave and access services when they need it.

These conversations often take time, so don’t worry if people aren’t instantly accepting of the idea. Many people will have years of stigmas and beliefs to work through.

Holidays can be full of joy and love! 🥰 Holidays can also be stressful and frustrating 😓.

Here are 3 tips to help you get though the the season:

1. Be Flexible, especially with your expectations.
If you cant complete your usual traditions, or things go awry - try not to panic!
People may not remember every detail of the holidays, but they will remember how they felt, especially when those feelings are positive.

2 Take Time Alone.
It's easy to over-commit to various gatherings. Don't to schedule breaks for yourself, even if it's just a walk outside for a few minutes.

3. Delegate Tasks
You don't have to plan the holidays alone! Ask for help and delegate where appropriate. This is a time for you to relax too.
Tell us in the comments, what's your favourite way to destress during the holidays? 🧐

Winter is here! Alongside the cold and snow, you might notice some mood changes… Consider adding these must-haves to your daily routine!

1. Sunlight! (Store bought is fine 😉)

We get about 20% of our daily Vitamin D from our diet and the remainder directly from the Sun! You may not be receiving enough sunlight during the winter months. Consider supplementing your light intake with a Vitamin D pill. At least 1600IU (40mcg) for an extended period has been shown to improve symptoms of Anxiety.

2. Special Tea

Sleep is CRUCIAL for our physical and mental health. As the sun sets earlier, your circadian rhythms can become a little disrupted. Having the same (Caffeine Free!) tea before bed can be a cue that it’s time to cozy up for the night!

3. Scheduled Lighting

This sunlight simulation can help mimic natural circadian rhythms and keep us waking up on time. This will prevent you from over-sleeping!

4. Social Plans!

Snowy roads, chilly days, and cold and flu can keep us locked up in our houses during the winter months. Be sure to regularly schedule time to socialize, in-person or online! Connection with others provides a HUGE boost to our mood!

5. Emergency Mental Health Plan

Creating an “In Case of Emergencies” card for your mental health can keep you safe when times are really getting tough. Make a physical version, and keep it in your wallet or phone case.
On it you might include: a safe person to call, an activity that helps you feel good, your favourite snack, and a positive reminder to yourself.

While it might seem trivial at the moment, a safety plan is an essential tool when it becomes hard to even get out of bed.

Don’t forget to schedule regular visits with your mental health care providers!

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” Eckhart Tolle

Gratitude helps us to recognize the positives and to keep them at the front of our mind, even when we face hardship. Abundance does not come from how many things we physically own, but rather from how much love and care we can find in our lives.

12/04/2023

You may have heard of Automatic or Common Thinking Styles. These thought patterns can trap us and send us into a negative spiral. Here are some counterparts to those initial thoughts. 😎

These Positive Thinking Patterns can help support you through difficult times:

💙 Middle Ground - When you feel drawn to black and white thinking try to remember that there is a grey area! Often times a little flexibility can go a long way.

💙 Growth Mindset - When you feel stuck and like everything is hopeless, remember that there is always the possibility for positive changes. The things you want might not happen right away!

💙 Gratitude - If you are drawn to worse case scenarios, beliefs that the grass is always greener on the other side, or feel like the things you have aren’t really that great, then try to make a conscious effort to be thankful for even the smallest of things. Gratitude over time is shown to increase happiness.

💙 Instantiation - If you feel like one small mistake can ruin your day, try to remember the vast amount of time that you will spend doing other things! It’s okay if this moment isn’t great, but there are so many more moments where things could be better.

💙 Evidence Based Reasoning - If you are drawn to making emotional conclusions - for example, if you feel terrible, then things must be terrible! - Then try to look at the facts of a situation. Notice all the things that are true. Your emotions may not line up with the truth. And emotions are ever-changing.
